Canceling after online check in
Due to circumstances beyond our control we are most likely going to have to cancel our Labor Day weekend vacation. I did an online check in for the hotel we were going to stay at last night, the Camelback in Scottsdale.
Has anyone cancled after an online check in. I am hoping to avoid a one night charge, but I suppose if I have to I can pay for a night. Am I better off calling the hotel, or the 800 number for Marriott? Thanks, J |
So you didn't show up last night?
I expect you may be stuck. I have had luck calling the hotel, even late the day of but never tried the day after.\ If however, you checked in last night for tonight I would call the hotel, I find that sometimes they will work with you when the 800 # won't. |
I've had better luck calling the hotel directly, too. Good luck.

Sorry that did not work out well the way I typed it. Let me try again:
I have a 3 night stay starting this evening 1-September. Last night, 31-August I used the online check feature on my mobile device. I will not be able to make my vacation. Although I have already used the web check in feature, will I have any success in canceling my reservation without penalty? |
Again, calling the hotel and explain the circumstance will likely yield the best result. Even if you had the old school 6pm Day of Arrival cancellation policy, I'm not sure how how web check in affects that, if they consider you already in virtually. Nothing to lose by calling.

I have had luck calling hotel evening of check in (flight delays and thus not arriving that day), hotel was willing to cancel without charge. Online check in 24 hours earlier should not make much difference. |
I ran in to a similar problem. I checked in online to a hotel for a Sunday night, but due to flight problems I never actually made it there until Monday. I had called the platinum line and they said they took care of it but when they got the bill I was charged. The front desk clerk manually gave me a credit for the first night.

I called, they would not let me cancel; however I could change it to any date in the future. So I did. Now i can cancel it online. :-).
Thanks. |
Awesome, thanks for letting us know. Could be a good tactic for the future. Surprised they let this loophole exist.
|
this is not the first time this loophole has been published but please keep on publishing it so that Marriott will close it for all others

I stay at a fair number of Marriotts (hence the status), but I've never used the online check in.
I'm not a technophobe. It's just that I do not understand the benefit of doing so. Does this magically get me higher up on the upgrade list to the mythical suites than I would be if I just checked in when I get to the hotel? Hmmm, there probably is a whole posting on this issue somewhere. |

Super late check in to let them know I am still coming c. Making sure I have confirmation early on about a late check out Otherwise, not a lot of value for a regular check in time and exit |

IME, good for:
a. Super early check in, where I want to know when I land in a city if my room is ready or not; b. Super late check in to let them know I am still coming c. Making sure I have confirmation early on about a late check out Otherwise, not a lot of value for a regular check in time and exit Although I receive the message indicating I can check in the day before I never use it just in case circumstances change and I need to try and swing a last-minute cancellation. |
I've had no issues canceling after online check-in without penalty (status helps).
i was told that although your room is ready, you're technically not fully "there" until the hotel gives you your keys (PP line told me this). |
Front desk clerk told me that on line check in gets you the first available room, not the best and dimishes your opportunity for an upgrade. Never do it.
