UK Credit Card
I have done some searching, and found some old info regarding a Visa card in the UK which was closed down.
Are there any current Marriott points earning cards available in the UK? Thank you. BBB :) |
Creation is the Marriott UK credit card company but its a Mastercard and not a Visa so its a choice when you book of do you collect the extra points or do you want a free breakfast!
Unfortunately I don't think its open to new applications, just existing customers. |
You are correct, it is closed to new applicants.
The only thing I can see to do is to get the SPG Amex (:td:) and transfer through SPG. |
There are a number of threads about this - the UK card issued by Creation has been closed to new applicants for what seems like years.
There has been lots of speculation about a replacement, but nothing for ages. Those of us who have the card are okay, but it does seem strange that no apparent efforts have been made to introduce a replacement - it is also strange, as nequine says, that it is a Mastercard; when the big push this year has been free breakfast when paying with Visa; thereby actively discouraging people from using the Marriott branded credit card. |

But, as you say, very odd to be discouraging their own product tie ups. |
Thankfully as gold I get free brekkies (if its not included in the rate) but is annoying that Marriott favour using Visa yet the UK credit card is a Mastercard one.

Although I have the Marriott card it sits in my drawer unused at the moment as at the beginning of the year I sprung for the SPG AMEX paying the £75 fee and receiving 11,000 SPG points, which are worth 33,000 Marriott which I always manage to redeem at 1UScent per point and is therefore worth at least $330.
The AMEX pays 1SPG per £ spent which is 3 Marriott points, that's triple Creations Marriott rate. The AMEX also pays 2SPG per £ spent st SPGs and Marriott's - that's the equivalent of 6 Marriott points, again double the Creation Marriott rate. Bearing in mind the latest High Court judgement on AMEX Co-Branded merchant rates I can't see the card lasting till renewal next year but in any event I plan to cancel it before I have to pay the fee. In the meantime I'll have the wife sign up, pay her £75, get her 11kSPG signon and I'll become her second cardholder after I cancel my card and continue earning double points till it ends. The wife's SPG points can then be transferred to her Marriott account and over to me. Simples! |

Does the 3 month bonus point spend period begin when you "activate" the card, or when it is sent to you? I am away at the moment, and it was on my list of things to do when bored in a hotel room in a week or twos time, but don't want to do it if it means I will be cutting my time short to spend the £1k... |
Thanks, BingBongBoy I'm afraid I just didn't know the answer to that, but I'd plan on the basis of 3 months from the time it's sent out. Luckily it's not a particularly high spend threshold.

I did not get an immediate answer on my application either anyways, which is odd considering my credit rating etc. so it will only add to the application time anyways.
And yes, not a high spend, I can do that in a few days... :D |
