This should be straight forward. Just call and ask to drop the dates in question. You already hold the nights and award does not involve potential rate changes. If you don't call in advance and waited until you check in, then you'll have to deal with getting points back.

Apparently it has worked differently on the SPG side where the requirement is new inventory has to be available for a change to be facilitated. There is concern on that board that even though Marriott has said changes will be allowed if you are holding the reservation (not date, but say to a lower points amount) and call in over there most people do not think Marriott will follow that policy even though MR has done this for years.

Call the hotel directly if you don't get the answer you want from Marriott agent. Call during office hours and ask to speak to the booking/revenue manager, your Marriott res may not update immediately, but its not an issue.

If you drop a night at the end of your stay, pretty much the worst thing that can happen is that the hotel charges you an early checkout fee of maybe $50 if that's their policy. However, telling the front desk when you check in usually results in no fee and no change to your room rate as typically the fee applies (for example in large convention hotels) if you tell them after check in that you'll be leaving early or don't tell them at all until you go to the front desk to check out on your actual day of departure.

It's harder to drop days at the beginning of a reservation without affecting the rate since if you no show on the first day, you lose the entire booking and are charged for the first night at most hotels.
