Just like getting upgraded on an airplane, you're getting something because of status that you would otherwise pay quite a bit for. Concierge access isn't an upgrade since that's a basic perk that every Gold/Plat gets. That's akin to getting checked bag fees waived on an airline. Getting a first-class seat? That's an upgrade. Same idea with a hotel. Getting a much better room, not getting the same room but on a floor with a lounge.

Well, thank you for redefining the program rules. I'm sure Marriott management will be in touch to thank you.:rolleyes:

Concierge LOUNGE access is indeed a GM/PM perk regardless of room assigned. Concierge ROOM access is an upgrade (whether you think so or not) as these typically have upgraded amenities as well as being closer to the lounge.

To the OP: suite upgrades are explicitly excluded from the upgrade rules but you may luck into one (the operative word being luck). In my own experience, I have gotten by best upgrades (including suites) on weekends, even when using rewards points, when the hotel is more likely to be elite-light.

Non-antagonistically, I asked her why I didn't get an upgrade anyways at check-in, for being a Life Plat and for a single night stay, checking in at 11:00 PM (little chance they're going to sell a suite at midnight for one night only). She looked at me and said "oh, you were upgraded to the concierge floor before. We consider that an upgrade".

I gave a wry smile, shook my head and headed back to the elevators. Maybe I'm wrong, but for Golds and Plats, getting a concierge floor room isn't an upgrade since concierge access is a basic status privilege. Right?

I got upgraded to the concierge floor yesterday (Monday). Of course the lounge was closed until Tuesday evening.

Wrong.

"Complimentary Room Upgrade: Based on room availability at check-in and limited to a Member's personal guestroom. Upgrades may include rooms with desirable views, rooms on high floors, corner rooms, rooms with special amenities, rooms on Executive Floors, or suites. All upgrades are granted on a space-available basis, as determined at the time of check-in. Upgrades are subject to availability and identified by each hotel. As pointed out there are many hotels now where the concierge lounge is not on the concierge flooe. And the upgraded amenities disappeared awhile ago for the most part.

I was about to reply with the same thing. Concierge rooms are, for the most part, exactly the same as non-concierge room. You might get a free bottle of water, but that's about it.

Some rooms on some Club/Concierge floors are undesirable since they're by the club entrance and can be very noisy.

What I really *like* (not) is when the Lounge is on the top of one tower and I'm "upgraded" to a bog-standard room far away in the other tower.

What about the robe? Club/Concierge floors still often have rooms with robes.

IME, Club/Concierge floor rooms are often quieter; less chance of having loud people in the hallways late at night.

Not my experience.

Thanks all for your replies, much appreciated.

I just got back from ATL, where I typically stay at the gateway Marriott.

I did get the concierge upgrade, as usual. I'm in the top 25 clients at this hotel. :D

I'm a Gold and I think this is an important point - I would definitely consider the Concierge floor an upgrade as in many hotels it is an upper floor even if the lounge isn't there. If the lounge is there I would consider that a further bonus as that's one fewer elevator ride I need to take morning and evening - some larger hotels have abysmal elevator service (JW Seoul, I'm looking at you). I've also certainly noticed enhanced amenities at some hotels for rooms on the Concierge floor, although to be fair those have all been JW's that are outside of the US. Lastly I would agree with the comment that the Concierge floor(s) in my experience are quieter than other floors as the guests are primarily business travelers, so usually only one guest per room who just want to sleep and get out in the morning.

As with all things in life, YMMV.

Good on you. Looked it up. Had lots of bog-standard rooms.

Spent one very noisy evening at the Marriott Long Wharf concierge floor. Didn't see one single thing in my room which was an upgrade over non-concierge rooms there.

True

I stayed at 5 different Marriott Properties (mostly Residence Inns) with family between April 16 to June 16 and got upgrades as requested. I have mostly got them in the past too.

- Residence Inn Denver (UPG from 1 BHk to 2 BHK)
- Residence Inn Denver Downtown (UPG from Studio to 1 BHK)
- Residence Inn Bronx (UPG from studio to 1 BHK)
- Residence Inn New York (UPG from Studio to 1 BHK) - without requesting
- Courtyard Marriott Mumbai (UPG from Executive Room to 1 BHK Suite)

Don't know if it has anything to do with me being Platinum for last 3 years. Not sure whether they can even see the history.

I would guess out of 40 nights this year I have been upgraded to Suite 15 X , concierge level or better room then reserved 25X
