Can you upgrade a certificate?

Hi all - I have a category 5 certificate that I don't think I'll be able to use anytime soon.

I know some people have tried to convert this to points, which marginal success. I am going on a trip recently, that has several category 7 hotels - has anyone had some luck calling and using the certificate and only paying the difference with points? (i.e. 10,000 MR points to bump up 5 to 7).

Thanks!

Use it (per its terms) or lose it.

Well that's unfortunate - another example of Marriott being difficult rather than accommodating. Thanks though everyone.

Have you had any luck having Starwood or Hyatt upgrade a certificate? The cost to Marriott and value to you of a certificate is significantly less than the equivalent points value for various reasons. You might try calling up and asking for an extension of the ceritificate.

I am not sure that having a corporation unwilling to bend the rules for one individual is being difficult.

and aren't these annual Cat 5 certs really coming from Chase to begin with?

Yawn... This has to be the most frequently asked question on this board.

These certs can't be upgraded, but in the past members have found it easy to extend their duration. Just call Marriott.

I would say reports are (and my experience) is the Marriott is flexible on nearly everything. The only thing thing they are consistently firm on is upgrading promotional certs. They are fixed at that category-be in Chase or Megabonus etc. They will usually extend-especially Chase. I think Marriott works very hard to make sure we can take advantage of the programs benefits. YMMV

I've extended a 6 month cert twice - no issues. They're pretty good about it. Just keep extending it until you can use it.

I gotta admit, it's getting harder and harder to use the Cat 5s...

eishv May 9, 2015 3:48 pm

Thanks all - yeah, I know you can extend, and I will, but I agree with Pokee....its becoming challenge to use at Cat 5

If you could upgrade they might as well just give 25k points.
