I second this 100%. The travel package for 270,000 pts in exchange for 132,000 United miles and a 7 night stay in a Cat 5 is perfect.. that's 2 round trips to Europe, and a 7 night stay in an AC hotel. Can't beat that.
For those that stay lots and lots of nights, PT is a must... maximize the points with the 50% bonus, and the ability to convert 2:1 Marriott pts to United miles is unbelievable... I don't think this is sustainable by Marriott to continue this redemption, but I will make the most of it until that day comes. Platinum status is a must for the 75+ nights/yr traveler... I have not seen anything even close to comparable in HH, IHG, Starwood, etc. etc. etc. from a travel package redemption standpoint or hotel night redemption standpoint. If I am wrong, I am absolutely receptive to advice... especially catered to the 150+ nights/yr traveler. 7 nights w/ two adjoining rooms at a Cat-7 JW Marriott (both upgraded to high floor and better view by calling hotel) 284,000 United miles |

For Corp to give a hotel a "waiver" for the guarantee, they have to show the hotel as being contracted by someone (or a group) for all their rooms or some "event" has to be involved that will in effect contract all their rooms (i.e Superbowl, etc.).
I have a meeting with Marriott Corporate next week, so will confirm and can report back. |

You may well be right. It would be interesting to know exactly how much an event had to "take over" a hotel before they can get that waiver.
What she shared with me yesterday is that any hotel can submit for an exception at any point, but needs to provide justification to be reviewed. Apparently there is a difference between "sold out" and "really sold out." All Marriott brand hotels issue a "buffer" within the reservations system where they hold rooms at a certain point, which when reaching that point is "sold out" and reservations are held until the last minute (day of arrival reservations to fill out to the "really sold out" stage). Some hotels have blanket exception policies in place to never allow platinum overrides, unless the Marriott corporate reservations desk contacts the hotel directly to ask for an approval. When a hotel is "really sold out," they will not issue platinum overrides, regardless if it is a big event or group or just 100% of the rooms are booked through one off reservations. When a hotel is "sold out," platinum overrides are allowed unless the hotel submitted a justification as I mentioned above. My disclaimer, take this as this, it's not official Marriott policy, just what my contact there shared with me and her understanding of the process. |
