Wireless keys

I normally stay at marriott but for a could of days I'm stuck at a hoilday inn..one nice thing they have is wireless keys. U just wave it in front of the door and it opens. The key can even stay in your wallet. I hope marriott can switch to a key like this. Has anyone seen these keys at marriotts.

Yes. Several properties have them. This week FFI Queens/Queensboro Bridge, and CY Ottawa East both have it.

Renaissance Malmo and Courtyard Stockholm. Several UK properties too. Stayed at 7 Marriott hotels in US over the summer and sure some of them had it.

SPR in London has RFID keys.

The only thing I see slowing transition is a combination of two things:

1) cost for hardware, software and installation coupled with
2) the prospect of very soon replacing this technology with smart phone keys and
3) whether the current RFID technology is forward compatible with what is/will be the smart phone solution

We'll see. Hardware will have to be updated for smart phone solution, and hotels sure don't want to undergo that expense twice in a very short period. From a business perspective it is very smart to wait at least until they know whether the RFID solution is compatible with the smart phone solution.

These types of keys are actually in the build plans for any hotel that goes through a complete reno or is part of a Marriott new build. Spoke with one of the CY owners about this a while back when they added them to their property. Owners can submit exceptions to the prototype since they are costly but Marriott does seem to already be moving in that direction.

Exactly. I've used them in maybe a dozen high end hotels in Europe and Asia in the past year or so. Eventually they will be the norm, along with smartphone room keys, but it will take a lot of hardware costs so the most profitable hotels will get them first.

As others have posted, this feature has been offered at selected Marriott properties for at least a year.

I know many SPG properties have them, and they're now rolling out phone-based keys.
