San Juan, No more executive lounge access!
Was told by an associate who was staying at La Concha, that a notice went out that the new owners are limiting access to the Executive lounge to only their VIP customers. No more access for Marriott Plat or Gold.
Also heard the Marriott in San Juan as doing the same.
Just wondering how, if at all, Platinums will now be compensated...will the free breakfast coupon apply in this case? Or are island resorts exempt?
Does not sound good.

I haven't looked up the official names of the properties, but if they are resorts, they are exempt. They may have extended these benefits previously, but didn't have to.

Wow! I sent my parents to the San Juan Marriott in March and they loved the lounge. They did tell me how the lounge was going to shut down for the entire following week due to the influx of vacationing kids expected because of school vacations in the Northeast. Utter greed!

The La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort and the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino are both resorts.
As resorts, they are excluded from the lounge/breakfast benefit for Gold, Platinum, and PP. That's been the official policy for a long time. It's nice these properties did more in the past.

I was seriously underwhelmed by La Concha. This is the nail in the coffin as far as any future stays.

Sad to see. They were pretty much the last 2 resorts that gave anything to Platinums in the Caribbean/Florida.

Definitely a great reason to spread business among brands to maximize the benefit. Hilton continues to surpass MR in these popular redemption areas.

What frustrates me is when "resort" is not in the name, but the property is classified as a resort. Several in Orlando IIRC.

Speaks wonders of the hotel management team when you get a notice under your door on Monday that effective Wednesday you are no longer allowed in the lounge. This is not typical Marriott customer service. Was told the new owners are cutting costs as quickly as they can, and the lounge was one of the first to go. They are still allowing lounge access to their VIPs..will be interesting to see how they validate VIP.

Curious what constitutes a VIP.

My corporate rate at the RC is typically less expensive than the regular rate at La Concha. The only reason I could substantiate staying in Condado was because of the free breakfast/lounge accesss.

Marriott has implied in the past that lounges are primarily for business travelers.
Over the last 8 years of being a MR member my spouse has made numerous trips to Honolulu and San Juan as a business traveler. I am sure other people have to travel to Hawaii. Florida, Puerto Rico, etc. on business. Why are they denied the benefits of status on these trips?

I spent a week at the Marriott Stellaris a few years back during spring break. The lounge was much appreciated, however two or three days when the cruise lines were in port, people were booked at the hotel the night before departure. It was the most incredible lounge scene ever. Like locusts had descended! Maybe they thought they were already at the cruise buffet.
Just saying that might have been a factor.

Absolutely. If you're Plat and Plat Prem customers on a hard earned vacation with their families aren't, then what is? The Uber rich willing to pay $1000 a night for a suite?
Marriott has given away so much status over the last few years that when everyone is special, no one is special. This is the impact and just the start of it IMO.
