Earning points on event block rooms?

Hey FT,

I'm completely new to Marriott, and don't have any relationship with Marriott. For my upcoming wedding, 6/21/14, we're planning to block rooms at a Marriott near the venue. On the letter of intent that we're in the process of finalizing, it says:

Approximately (10) business days after the conclusion of the event (provided that the event is not cancelled and xxxxx/xxxxx wedding has otherwise complied with the material terms and conditions of this agreement and books a minimum of 10 room nights), the hotel will either award points or submit an award for airline miles:

CHECK ONE OPTION BELOW:

 Award Points to the Contact (as identified on page 1 of this Agreement or the Authorized Signer of this Agreement

Member Name: ______________________________________________

Rewards Program Member Number: ___________________________

 Award Airline Miles to the Contact (as identified on page 1 of this Agreement or the Authorized Signer of this Agreement

Member Name ______________________________________________

Rewards Program Member Number ___________________________

Airline frequent flier account number ___________________________

Name of airline ______________________________________________

The number of Points or airlines miles to be awarded shall be determined pursuant to the Rewards Program Terms and Conditions, as in effect at the time of award. The Rewards Program Terms and Conditions are available on-
line at marriottrewards.com, and may be changed at the sole discretion of the Rewards Program at any time and without notice.

The individual(s) identified above to receive either Points or airline miles may not be changed without such individual(s)’ prior written consent. By inserting the airline mileage account information, the recipient elects to receive airline miles rather that Points. All Rewards Program Terms and Conditions apply.
A couple questions: This sounds like it could be a nice little earning potential. I can't possibly imagine I'd get all the stay credits (40 nights...that would be amazing). If so, I'd definitely establish a Marriott relationship and take that. Otherwise, the frequent flier program earning potential is intriguing.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations on how to proceed? This thing is getting finalized Friday, so I'm trying to figure out ASAP.

Thanks for any help!

For events you will generally get 10 nights. Your own room night for a wedding is generally comped as part of the package and does not earn nights above that.

Thanks!

It looks like (on the T&C on Marriott), it's 1 mile per $1 spent and 3 points per $1 spent on rooms for the event (15K mile max / 50K point max). We're probably getting ~40 room nights, somewhere around $125 a night. Considering I have no Marriott relationship, if this is the case, 5K miles > 15K points, yes?

Does anyone else have any recommendations before I submit this doc? :)

Thanks!

Never did this but pretty piss poor earnings for the effort and amount spent IMO. 15K Marriott probably won't get you a room in a decent area and I think collecting miles (esp 5k) is useless.

An industry standard is one room comp'ed per 10. Perhaps you can get them to comp you 4 rooms for the future or treat 4 of your guest? Wouldn't hurt to ask.

Will you get a boatload of points for the F&B & room portion of the wedding?

Best wishes.

I agree it seems bit weak. I should have clarified--We aren't holding the wedding at the hotel, but at another venue nearby. 80% of the attendees live locally, but those flying in need rooms. Most are making a mini-vacation of it, so we've got about 10 rooms for people for 3-5 nights. It's not a huge thing. But you're right, 15K Marriott points won't get me squat. I'll take the AA miles, at least.
