Transferring Marriott Points
 

Anyone have experience transferring Marriott Points successfully? Tips? This has been painful and unsuccessful every time I've tried to do it.

Backstory: BF and I are traveling together. We both have points galore and want to make a reservation for 140k points under my name (I have platinum and he only has silver, and we want lounge access) but using his points (he owes me).

Our accounts have the same address. He called and tried to transfer points, but they said it could only be done towards a specific reservation AND only if I didn't have enough points to make that reservation. Let's say I have 200k points in my account that I don't want to use.

Do I need to...
1) Make a reservation for 200k points that I'll cancel later so he can transfer points to the reservation I actually want to make? Will those points "stick" once I cancel my old reservation?
2) Make the reservation with my own 140k points, tie up my remaining 60k with a fake reservation, have him transfer 140k for ANOTHER fake reservation, then cancel the two fake ones? In that case, would the 140k he transfers stick in my account after the reservation they were made for is cancelled?
3) Make the reservation under his account and ask the hotel very nicely to hook us up?

If you have 200k points in your account and you want to transfer all his points, make a reservation for the total point amount and then call for the transfer. Once the transfer is complete cancel the reservation and the points will be redeposited into your account.

Sorry, just want to be sure I understand correctly --

I have 200k points and I want to make a reservation in San Juan with his 140k. Are you suggesting I make a reservation for 340k and get his points transferred towards that reservation, and then cancel it, which will put all 340k into my account? Or I make a reservation for a different amount?

Marriott will transfer the points required to order an award. Thus if you have 200K points and order a 200K award, no points will need to be transferred. If you order a 300K award and have 200K in your account, Marriott would pull 100K from the other account. If you want the full 140K transferred into your account you will need to order a 340K (assuming you have 200K in your account.)

And if you cancel the award after the transfer, all points will be transferred into your account.

Why not just use your points for this reservation and then when you don't need the lounge access for a future stay use his points?

Does anyone know if the transfered points will be counted in the LT points calculation?

Why shouldn't they......they're added to your acc't.....
But why bring it up in a monitored forum so they can put in a new T&C to preclude it.....

Possibly because other programs do limit which "points/miles" count toward their lifetime programs. So it is understandable that someone may wonder if Marriott holds to the same pattern or not.

Because that is what these forums are for: to ask questions about the various programs in hopes of getting answers. If you are worried that someone should have been able to find the answer through searching existing threads rather than posting in an existing thread, there may be some merrit. But personally, I would have provided some suggested search patterns to help the poster get a feel for "how" to search for an answer (and probably still answered the question as well).

They should but I don't believe they are counted. I asked a few months ago a MR agent and was told no. But he could have been incorrect I didn't geta second "opinion" so I would suggest to call and ask and report back as to what they told you.

MR agents have been known to be wrong more then once............that's why I suggested contacting CS and/or MC and getting an answer IN WRITING as responses on the phone have "no weight" in the long run of things, especially if there's any disagreement later.......
further, a written response can then be published here and then relied upon by anyone interested in the answer.....

That's a good point. We'll see what response the OP gets. I do hope that they do indeed count as they have been deposited into one's account so they should but we'll see.

since they're deducted from the transferors account and no longer counted for them, why shouldn't they be counted in the transferee as it balances out just like all other points (whether they be from stays, bonuses, CCs, compensation or other).......but if I remember one thing from law school (back in the stone-age), get it in writing from a credable source (herein MR, CS, MC) as that can then be relied upon.....

But I can see MR coming back to the OP and saying that since these points were earned by that person, they are being counted for his lifetime points and therefore cannot be counted for the person these points are being transferred to since that could constitute double counting.
