Reservation change question - ability to keep same room type if no longer available?

I have a reservation at a Ritz Carlton for 3 nights in a club deluxe room and as it turns out I will only need to be there for 1 of those nights. When I go to change my reservation I see that there are no more club deluxe rooms available for the night I am looking at (and this night is one of the nights in my current reservation). I know if I cancel the reservation and try to rebook the club deluxe room will not be available for that night. Is there any way to reduce the number of nights from 3 to 1 and still keep my original room category. I called the Marriott platinum line and they said no, but I wanted to double check here. Thanks for any insight into this!

I'd call the property directly. I'm surprised that the PLT line couldn't help. Does the property have a minimum stay during that period? Are the rooms you're looking for available on-line for 2 or 3 nights, but not 1. That's the only reason that comes to mind.

There is no minimum stay requirement and they have regular deluxe rooms and not the club deluxe rooms available. I will try calling the property but it is in Tokyo and my experience with them is the language barrier might be a little difficult.

Can you email the property? Often the language barrier is a bit lower that way.

I did that after reading your message and got the same response as the Platinum line. They said it cannot be done because in order to do it the system cancels the original reservation and then books a new one and if the same room type is not available on that day it cannot be booked. This is a little frustrating.

I would think that canceling the room would put it back in inventory. I can see why you can't book the 1 night before cancelling the 3 night, as would be preferable. But do they tell you why the room you just cancelled wouldn't be immediately available? AFAIK, there is no automated "waiting list" where it would get assigned.
