Can't Cut up a New EMV Chip Marriott Visa
So I got the new Chase/Marriott Visa Signature card with the EMV chip in it. If you have seen or have it is made of a much heavier material. Almost seems to be made out of metal vs. plastic. Maybe it is.
Anyways, I got one for my 13 year old son to go on an upcoming overseas class trip. My wife said, "No way!" So we got him a old fashion ATM card with a Master Card logo tied to a Youth Checking account. That should work for the trip. But now I want to cut up the Signature Visa I got for him. The regular scissors we have don't even make a dent. The just slip off the card. I tried bending the card multiple times. It is a little distorted but that is it. So any suggestions? @:-) |
You can pick up some shears from any local hardware shop that are cheap. They can cut through sheet metal, aluminum, barbwire etc. Chase will also send you an envelope to send the card back if you want. They can destroy it for you.

Thanks
I think I will try the envelope from Chase idea. I would probably poke an eye out or cut a finger off trying shears on it.

Is Chase mailing these cards out to current cardholders upon request or only upon expiration of current cards?

There is a related thread on how to destroy the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which is a metal card:

Mine expired in June and I got the new on the first week of May.
My wife has a chase sapphire preferred that feels like metal and is heavier and more metallic feeling than this new Marriott card. Still the card looks kind of cool. Mostly black w/o much writing. The numbers aren't raised and they are left-aligned and lower. |
I'd bet that if you nuke the card for five seconds or so it will disable the chip and a layer of spray paint (or nail polish) should hide any printed markings. Personally, I'd use a hammer and nail before sending the card back.
