Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2019)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

The codes for the new partial packages are:
New Cat 1-4: QP83
New Cat 5: QP91
New Cat 6: QP99
New Cat 7:

This process will cancel your current Travel Package, reissue a Travel Package one category lower and result in a refund of 30,000 points to your account. To submit a request, follow these steps:
  • Select “Packages - Deals” from the “Topic” drop down menu
  • Submit your request
As a reminder, status.marriott.com will periodically have additional updates.

The legacy certificates map to the new certificates as such:
Cat 1-5 => Cat 1-4
Cat 6 => Cat 1-4
Cat 7 => Cat 5
Cat 8 => Cat 5
Cat 9 => Cat 6
Tier 1-3 => Cat 6
Tier 4-5 => Cat 7
==================================================

If you are unsure where you will use your 7 night stay, when you request the package, just ask for a category 1-5 hotel. That way you are out of the least number of points. If later, you decide to book for a higher level category, then you can do so and pay the difference the travel package points. If you can't use your certificate within the year, then as close to the one year anniversary (without going over!) call to extend the certificate for one more year. That's as long as they will typically allow, one extension. There is an option to expedite the mileage delivery to within three business days (sometimes faster) for $15. There are reports that this fee may be waived for platinum members.

Effective April 1 2017 re: Southwest & the companion pass:

"Purchased points, points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, and e-Rewards, e-Miles, Valued Opinions and Diners Club, points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonuses, flight bonuses, and partner bonuses (excluding points bonuses earned on the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase) do not count toward Companion Pass."

Can I book SPG properties with my Marriott Travel Package? As of 9/1/2018 apparently not. see https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30155836-post6529.html

Marriott travel package

i have now finally enough MR points to redeem for a travel package. I also identified the hotel and the period when i want to stay but dont know yet with which airline i should get the miles. As my stay would only be in 9 months, i want to know whether i could book the stay now online to secure the 7 nights and then apply a Travel package later to this booking? If there is a transfer bonus to one of the airlines in the coming months, it would make it easier to decide which miles to get

If i would book the hotel now, i would no longer have the points to book the Travel package so i dont know if booking hotel first and then a travel package works. (If needed i could transfer points from SPG to book a Travel package)

Marriott allows award bookings without having the required points available in your account (though doing so when you actually have the points in your account might require calling into Marriott Customer service to get that done.)

So, yes, you could make the reservation now and hold off a bit on ordering the TP award.

I wish I had known this earlier! Do the folks at MR know this? Will it be a hassle? Thank you!

I do this all the time. For some reason I do not want the points deducted until right before a stay. But, just to be clear, since this thread is about the travel package, while you can reserve your seven day block at a hotel without having the points deducted/available, you will not get the airline points on a travel package until the points are deducted from your account.

While you do have to call Marriott and ask that the points not be deducted, or make a dummy reservation followed by your real reservation then cancel the dummy reservation so the points are put back into your account (PITA, easier to call) you can later click online to have the points deducted or have them automatically taken about a week before your stay.

My mistake. I should have been more specific, the United Airlines 10% bonus miles reward plus redemption is valid only til 30th Sept 2017.

Why is the 10% only valid until 9/30? I can't find anything on the page and the 10% has been a standard feature for quite a while. In the past in the fall this has also received a bump up to provide additional miles.

So you mean the MileagePlus bonus is going away?

Before the SPG / Marriott account link, I just make a dummy booking that deduct most of my points first, then I start making aware bookings without any points. Once I am done, I cancel the dummy booking.

Now with SPG / Marriott account link, I just transfer all my points to SPG instead of making the dummy booking.

I thought so too, and was wondering where this came from. From the Travel Package page on the Marriott website:
"You’ll receive 10% more MileagePlus miles when you redeem for a Marriott Rewards Hotel + Air Package, up to 12,000 more miles. Your bonus miles are shown below. Discover all the advantages of RewardsPlus. And for a limited time, Gold and Platinum Elite members can enjoy complimentary United Signature Service℠ for two people when redeeming for one of these packages. Restrictions apply. Call Marriott Rewards Guest Services for more details when redeeming. Redemption for this limited-time offer ends September 30, 2017."

I read this as the Signature Service ending on 9/30 for Golds and Plats. So I agree, the wording seems to indicate the overall 10% bonus is a standard feature.

Ok so I have used the signature service before, you get personal escorts thru the airport and hand-holding until your on the plane. You also get lounge access where ever there is a Star Alliance lounge globally.

If your Gold level Star Alliance you get this automatically.
