Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2019)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

The codes for the new partial packages are:
New Cat 1-4: QP83
New Cat 5: QP91
New Cat 6: QP99
New Cat 7:

This process will cancel your current Travel Package, reissue a Travel Package one category lower and result in a refund of 30,000 points to your account. To submit a request, follow these steps:
  • Select “Packages - Deals” from the “Topic” drop down menu
  • Submit your request

The legacy certificates map to the new certificates as such:
Cat 1-5 => Cat 1-4
Cat 6 => Cat 1-4
Cat 7 => Cat 5
Cat 8 => Cat 5
Cat 9 => Cat 6
Tier 1-3 => Cat 6
Tier 4-5 => Cat 7
==================================================

If you are unsure where you will use your 7 night stay, when you request the package, just ask for a category 1-5 hotel. That way you are out of the least number of points. If later, you decide to book for a higher level category, then you can do so and pay the difference the travel package points. If you can't use your certificate within the year, then as close to the one year anniversary (without going over!) call to extend the certificate for one more year. That's as long as they will typically allow, one extension. There is an option to expedite the mileage delivery to within three business days (sometimes faster) for $15. There are reports that this fee may be waived for platinum members.

Effective April 1 2017 re: Southwest & the companion pass:

"Purchased points, points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, and e-Rewards, e-Miles, Valued Opinions and Diners Club, points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonuses, flight bonuses, and partner bonuses (excluding points bonuses earned on the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase) do not count toward Companion Pass."

Can I book SPG properties with my Marriott Travel Package? As of 9/1/2018 apparently not. see https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30155836-post6529.html

Had to look that one up myself. Yes, you can upgrade. You have to call MR and tell them you have a certificate (from a travel package) and you want to upgrade to a RC1-3 tier. They will tell you the difference in points. Should follow the chart here:

https://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi

It's easy to go up a category, but not down. So always buy a travel package with Cat 1-5 hotel, then about one week before going to your hotel (to keep your options open to cancel the trip, etc.) at that point call and change from other points to these. Of course this assumes you have enough points to have both out at the same time.

And of course, you can't change the number of airline miles once you select your hotel package. Usually you can extend one year from the date you call: you call to extend (so wait till the last day if possible) and if you really can't use the week, you can redeposit for very few points (like 15K points for a cat 1-5 hotel for 7 nights).

Don't know if they changed the rules, or had a poor CSR, but I asked about upgrading the hotel portion of a Cat 1-5 travel package I have last week and was told I cannot.

Just make sure you are talking to MR and not reservations. The reservation agents do not understand. MR reps do, and will help you.

I was told by agent I couldn't switch between Marriott and RC hotel awards as they are different programs. I'm just waiting for a few extra points to post.

I just downgraded a hotel from a travel package, and got the point difference back in my account. I can't imagine that upgrades by paying the point differential are now not possible.

I think the redeposit amount was based on what the airline miles/points would have cost if they had originally started off as a airline/travel reward transfer (not very good rates).

Also you can book the travel package but not name the hotel or set dates. This allows you to use the airline miles/points for a current vacation and save the hotel stay for a future vacation.
I just cancelled two cat 8 travel packages that expire April 2015. The agent assured me the hotel packages could be extended by a year. I sincerely hope she's right! Any thoughts on that?

There have been many posts here with people successfully extending their certs for a year. So that would seem to be the norm.

Note that those who have extended their certs had the certs extended exactly 12 months from the date of the extension request, not the original expiration date of the cert. So if you need almost 24 months to use the cert, you would need to wait until just before the cert was going expire before calling and getting it extended.

I just read the entire thread. Good info! I hope I can get some clarification on the logistics of the air miles.

I'm getting close to collecting 300K points, and is interested in converting to AA or BA miles using the travel package deal. My guess (from reading here) is that I call MR and tell them which package I want, and they put the 7-night cert in my account, with 1 year expiration. But how is the airmiles taken care of? Is it simply asking me for my airmile number, and they deposit the miles into it, free and clear? Or am I obligated to book some tickets within a time limit?

Since I probably won't stay in any 1 place for 1 night, I wonder if I can book the 7-nights for family/friends?

MR will ask for the FF account info for which you want to deposit. The miles are transferred to that account and are simply governed by the rules of the FF plan from then on. No rules on when to book etc. They can expire per the FF plan. (most require activity every 18 months etc.)

You can give the 7 night cert away. Just book in someone else's name-but it must be used all at once-at one property.

Just did a travel package with Southwest to get the Companion Pass. Miles posted next day. I ordered category 8 certificate but was told that I could upgrade to category 9 if needed. Just would have have points to take care of the difference.

NE1 know If I use a higher category certificate for a lower cat hotel is there a credit (points) issued for the difference.? E.g. using a cat 8 (five night) for a cat 5 five night stay.

Thanks!

Ive read this thread but its not real clear on whether or not you can downgrade categories for TP's. It seems that upgrading isnt a problem, but I dont want to assume that you can downgrade.

I have a cat 9 right now and will be staying at a cat 7 now due a change. Can they reissue my certificate for a cat 7 and refund back the point difference?
