Marriott upgrades for the silver guy?

We used amex points for a reward trip in a Marriott. My husband is a silver member. He is diamond in Hilton. What are the chances that we get upgraded on arrival? Can I call marriott and get his status upgraded before?
The Marriott is in ARuba

Slim to none.

Yes. I don't think I ever got an upgrade as a silver. Gold is really the first level were you have an outside chance of an upgrade (or at the very lease comp concierge level access)

I'll go farther. None. At least if you are thinking of a suite or conceirge floor/lounge access. Period.

I assume you are talking some time in February or March, like this weekend. If so, none.

I wouldn't say NONE. Back before I became a true frequent traveler I would still score frequent upgrades simply by being polite and friendly with the gate agent, front desk attendant, rental car clerk, etc.

If the trip is special for some reason (e.g. celebrating a big anniversary), politely mention it at check-in and ask if they can do anything to get you a better room. The worst that can happen is that they say "no". They may offer to upgrade your room for a certain amount of cash per night (which may or may not be worth it to you), or you may catch them on a good day or with low occupancy where they're happy to help a courteous guest as opposed to the obnoxious pigs they deal with day in/day out who rudely DEMAND special treatment. You know the kind who flash Centurion cards or other forms of "VIP-dom" and expect the red carpet to be rolled out?

Just be nice, like you'd want to be treated if you were working the other side of the check-in desk, and see what happens.

I have been upgraded three times as a lowly silver, once in Marriott Copley in Boston, at the Renaissance in Orlando, and once for a week at the marriott in Tucson. It was automatic in Boston and took some kindness in the other two!

Since I always a get a nice room at a Mariott (and find the "upgrades" to Concierge/Executive rooms to often be reasonable for what ya get), as a general member and a Silver I'm pretty satisfied!

Though I admit if I stayed 50-75 nights, it would be half at Hyatt and half at Starwood properties.

As a plat, Do I get upgraded at resorts? Yes, I guess thats what they tell me.. However these are not upgrades that you will go calling all your friends and family at home saying Woo hoo you should see the upgrade that I got... might you be the 1 in a million case who gets the whole enchilada... maybe.. but don't expect it or you'll be disappointed. As a silver, my best guess is that you will not have 'much' of an upgrade but you never know.. what can you lose by asking.. not much

Have been given lounge access about 35% of the time as a silver.
