Worth of $ of cat 4 certificate?

My question is how much do you think it worth? I have 1 night next week on a hotel that cost $87 tax included. I dont know if use the certificate or pay the night. Certifcate is good for 11 more months.

I would think in the US you could get up to $150 or so in value.

In Asia closer to $200 value. I am using in KUL at the JW.

YMMV

for $87 I would pay if I was sure I could use it prior to expiration

As stated above you can get better value for sure BUT just make sure it doesn't go to waste! I used one a couple years ago for a $199 room in Salt Lake City. On the other hand my mom let one expire last year in her account. You have a long time so that's good.

My rule of thumb is that the rate has to be over $100 + tax for me to use a cat 4 cert.

$87 is really little + if you pay cash now you can score Megabonus. I normally use the certs in between Megabonus or when it's cost something like $200 a night.

This certificate...is it the one that you received with the Marriott Rewards credit card as a benefit of getting the CC. My Certificate was for 6 months and not a year. Call to make sure when your certificate expires.

the expiration date of any unused cert in your account is shown below the transaction activity section of MRs..........

The best I can do is $200USD in US and roughly $310USD in Asia. As long as you don't waste it, then you should be all good to go. :)

I have a similar philosphy to say if its worth it.

i look at it the same way when using pts for a free night vs pay.

I would use the cert if it was due to expire.

For example I did use one I had that was going to expire on sept 30 from the spring promo...The stay was after the summer promo ended(check out sep 1) so I couldnt get credit for it and the pts value was too high so I used the cert for the free night when the hotel was around $90. I did an intentional stay close to my home so I got the free night cert that ended 31 August..then used the other free night for that stay ending on sept 1.....it was basically a wash but it allowed me to extend the free night.

I'm not as married to the dollar value of the room I'm using the cert for. For me, what's more important is using them to get a night I wouldn't otherwise. For example, my wife and I just spent a weekend in Gettysburg on certs - the room rate was cheap, but we wouldn't have paid the approx. $200 total for the rooms otherwise, so the value of the cert for us was a free trip to Gettysburg for the weekend. We were able to spend a few days doing something fun for no more money than we would have spent on meals around home anyways. Bu I wouldn't rush to use one if you have time and you wouldn't mind paying the going rate anyways...

I've been able to get about $200 value out of mine.

If you think you can use the cert in the next 11 months, then I'd pay the $87. If you don't think you'll use it and you want to save $87+tax, then use the cert.

Cheers.

Sometimes even higher. Was able to redeem a 1 bedroom at Residence Inn Gravenhurst, Ontario over a summer weekend. Rate was $305 + taxes

I agree that if you have 11 months left on the cert, you may want to wait for a hotel stay where you normally have to pay a higher cash rate. However if the cert is about to expire soon, any amount saved is better than letting it expire unused. I recently used my certs instead of the $89 regular hotel rate, but the cert was about to expire soon, so I found it to be a good use of the cert.

Around my area, best I've gotten is $169 worth.
