Now THATS good news! Our annual convention is in Vegas, and my boss & I are Marriott junkies. We always have to stay off the strip to get the points of course. Not anymore! (fingers crossed).

I read last night that Marriott has made a bid in competition with The Planet Hollywood group who had previously bid on the property. Bids are supposed to be submitted by 6/16/03.
Marriott, if successful, plans to farm out the casino portion to another group and to operate the hotel portion under it's Renaissance division.
Have to see what happens.....

Here's a bit more on this topic from the Las Vegas Sun ...

It's interesting to see this come up again. There was talk about Marriott making a move before, but then it appeared that the Starwood/PH combination was a done deal. Oh well, I'd rather not see PH there, so I'll be rooting for Marriott.

Marriott does not seems to like to keep the casinos after buying the hotel. They bought the Summerlin Resort in Las Vegas and now the casino is operating under a separate name of Rampart Casino.

I believe Mr. Marriott wrote that the family did not support gambling in The Spirit To Serve.

On the other side, they are operating Casinos in the Carribean (Aruba and San Juan if I remember right).

The family does have strong personal/religious beliefs but that has never impacted the company's direction.... not moving into gaming is a strategic decision.

Good observation. I remember that prior to Marriott opening their first hotel in Salt Lake City many years ago, they requested some sort of easement of the liquor/cocktail lounge restrictions before they'd commit to opening.
Although the Marriott family are devoted Mormons, they are also shrewd business people as well. They knew they had to offer a suitable cocktail lounge experience in order to support a full service Marriott.
