Is $50 deposit refundable?
 

I have a reservation for a week at the JW Marriott Oahu in January (award stay). They charged me a $50 deposit. Now I want to cancel. Is this deposit refundable?

If it was an award stay, why would they charge for a deposit?

Most times when a room is held they won't actually charge the CC that you use to hold the res.

I find the opposite to be true for me. I have paid for 4 nights this year that my trips got canceled. Although I did get the points/nights for them http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I'm a Platinum and I have an award stay at this hotel in Feb '02. They charged me the $50 deposit in June when I made the reservation.

They are charging this fee to separate those who are thinking of using an award and those who are actually going to use an award.

The deposit depends on the property - some require a deposit and some do not - you should have been told at time of booking if there was a deposit or not - I have 7 reward stays booked over the next 12 months and none have deposits required 4 in London, 2 in Paris and 1 in Fort Lauderdale.

So it really depends on the property - but the deposit is not across the board.

I believe a deposit is required at all Marriott properties in Hawaii -- but the deposit is fully refundable till 6pm day of arrival (or something like that). Most properties don't require deposits, however, even high demand ones like the Marriott's in London (I have two says planned with them next year -- no deposit charged)

The Marriott Grand Cayman charges a $200 deposit for an award stay....the deposit is charged to your credit card as soon as the reservation is completed (as did the Maui Marriott with their $50 deposit), and the Grand Cayman location does not even inform you of the deposit when booking on their website. The only clue was when I finished the booking process and the site read "your credit card has been charged the appropriate deposit".

I then called Marriott to question this. They told me that it is up to each individual resort to set the deposit requirements, if any. I informed the rep that I felt $200 was an excessive deposit for an award stay that was going to take place a year from now. She stated that, on regular paid reservations, they require a 2 night deposit. She said the deposit requirement would not be waived for a Platinum Elite member using an award. I then cancelled my reservation.

Hilton, I understand, takes no deposit for their award stays.
