Marriott Gift Certificates
 

Just a quick question -- If I use a Marriott gift certificate to help defray the cost of a rate will I get MR points for the entire cost of the stay or do I just get points for the paid portion?

I don't think so. I stayed at the Renaissance Madison (Marriott) in Seattle this weekend at a rate of $120 for the night. The bill that was slipped under my door indicated that I would get 1,200 base points. When I checked out, I used $100 in Marriott gift certificates to pay the $150+ bill. This morning I noticed that the receipt they gave me now says my base points are only 20!! This makes no sense. If I had paid with a $100 bill, I would have gotten 1,200 points. Why is a gift certificate any different? In my eyes, it is the same as money. Someone, please enlighten me.

You should get credit for the entire bill, not just the net after using your certificates.

I pay as much as possible of EVERY Marriott/Renaissance bill with gift certificates. I have never had this problem. The front desk must have posted the certificates incorrectly, as something other than cash equivalent. Get it fixed!

After looking at your statement on the marriottrewards.com web site, if the amount is incorrect, simply call the Marriott Rewards help desk and they will credit you with all of the points you are entitled to. It does not state on any Marriott Cheques certificates that the users of the certificates are not eligible for points. Those certificates are treated as money in all Marriotts (they just do not give any change back for credit balances).

Thanks everyone. This was my thinking too. The certificate does not mention it, and as far as I am concerned they should be treated the same as cash. I'll definitely follow up on it.
