Marriott Suites
If you want to use your Marrott Rewards points (like I did for this San Diego Trip)
Consider staying at a Marriott Suites hotel. Very good service, decent location, good breakfasts and the room: It was bigger than many apartments in NYC! For the price (350 a nite) It should be special. And it nice to get the reminder about switching the clocks back for the of Daylight Saving Time. As I get old, the memory tends to go... CATMAN |
Catman, $350 a night in San Diego? For Marriott Suites? Not in my lifetime! This confirms what you posted sometime ago (I think it was you) about Marriott prices getting out of line. They are. I was recently at a Marriott Suites about 35 minutes east of Philly and paid a corporate rate of $189. Nice hotel, but not worth $189. I now find it difficult, if not impossible, to find a decent Marriott at anything less than $160 no matter where you are. Even Hilton has not followed these ridiculous increases.

I was trying to be cynical about the 350 a night for this room, Mile King. I think I needed one of those wild computer faces after
my statement. Noticed the hotel was about 60-percent occupied. But what I didn't mention (and should have) is that I paid for the room with Marriott Rewards points. Total cost: $0.00. But Marriott's rates are getting so out of hand their two downtown hotels in Manhattans are half full many days. Maybe that's why they have the weekend specials. CATMAN |
I agree with you Catman about the Marriott rates. During baseball season, I stay at a Renaissance hotel outside of Boston. It used to be $69.00 on the weekends, $79.00 with breakfast; a really great price at a super hotel. Since Marriott's takeover, these rates have jumped to $109.00, without breakfast, hardly the value they once were. The restaurant used to be full morning and evenings, but the last time I was there the restaurants were just about empty. Why would Marriott destroy what was once a very popular weekend getaway in an area that is basically deserted on weekends?

Thanks for confirming all my other posts about Marriott. It is shocking to think that the San Diego Marriott Suites really jacked up their rates. But it is San Diego and you will find most of the hotels booked for miles around. There is a Shortage of rooms. The Suites is located downtown and close to the now expensive and busy Gaslight area full of dining and drinking. One of the few cities, where a lot of good stuff is happening in the downtown area all week long. Plus the mass transportation of Close by Railroads up the coast, and the Trolley down the coast to Tijuana. As well as the ship terminals down the street, the marina, and the only city with a downtown airport! Even if it has only 1 runway!
But that isn't the end of the story. Wait until the new Baseball stadium is finished near the Marina and convention center. The Marina Marriott is going to go crazy with their rates for the tiny rooms in a former Intercontinental Hotel. You see it is all within walking distance. |
It's not just Marriotts, it's ALL hotels!
Marriotts, Hyatts, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, even Super 8 and Motel 6!!!! Clark Howard, the consumer guru in Atlanta (http://www.clarkhoward.com) was talking about this the other day. I thnk he said something like hotel rates have gone up 50% since 1991. I find it mostly impossible to get a good clean hotel room for a decent price nowadays. If you want to stay in a nice place in any city, you're talking about $200 easy and if you want some luxury, $300 plus!!!! Is it me, or is it ludicrous to pay so much just for a place that you're going to sleep and not much else! If you go to a resort to hand out, maybe so, but if you're passing through on business or if you have a busy vacation, I'd rather spend the money on ACTUALLY DOING THINGS, not for a room I'm hardly ever in!!!!! Mac ------------------ Via con Dios! |
Yes, It hurts even more when you have to pay those prices, arrive LATE at nite and leave early the next morning. I always tell the Desk Clerk on a late arrival, that I only want to rent the room for 1/2 the day and at 1/2 the price! They don't even blink or laugh.
