If nothing else, I'd like Marriott to include the higher level of i-net for Plats for free, as it would match *wood but would also be a differentiator between Gold and Plats. Right now Plats don't get that much extra over Gold bennies. Cheers. |

Given the uptick in band usage w/ all the devices out there, my guess is tiered won't be a fad. For slow i-net it will be free & for higher, it will cost. If there is free but no tiered at all & hotels have their costs increase, I'd expect them to reflect it in increased room rates.

Dear wenzlydale
Thank you for contacting Marriott. We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with information. We apologize for the misunderstanding regarding the terms and conditions for internet service. The Marriott Rewards terms and conditions state the following regarding internet services: "Free High-Speed Internet Access: Complimentary Internet access at all JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels, AC Hotels, Marriott Hotels & Resorts and Courtyard by Marriott (outside of U.S. & Canada only)." These properties within the United States are not included in the free internet access. If we can be of further assistance, we invite you to reply to this email. Thank you for choosing Marriott. TheT&Cs quoted are those shown on the website. So, if Courtyards in the US, (who never charged anyone before for internet access - well not since I started staying there), want to start charging for internet access, then elite members will have to pay as well !
Another enhancement ! Cheers. |
I think tiered internet service is BS. Just another scam way to try to get more money from people... except in this case it is really targeted at business travelers who are using more bandwidth. If I can't access my company VPN without paying for a "premium" internet connection, I will not stay at the hotel again.

The only way to get rid of the tiered pricing is scream. If we all don't stand up and complain, it will become as commonplace as resort fees (some hotels in Vegas with high resort fees are now going to tiered internet access...it can now cost up to $40 or more per day when the both fees are combined at various Station Casinos properties, for example...and people are paying it.). |

this is a dealbreaker for me, too. i have a need to access both my company VPN and my client VPN. VPN access should be a bare-minimum service. the first time i run into this at a property will be the last time i stay there. |
Just curious - those who say they won't stay at a property if they can't access their company's VPN for bizness purposes, won't your company pay for the internet?
They can't be relying on all employees having elite status to avoid i-net charges. And if they're looking for free only, wouldn't they have you all staying at the 2nd & 3rd tier brands instead to get it? FWIW - I'm torn on this one. I prefer not to pay for i-net, but most of the time I'm not doing bandwidth-hogging things, so basic internet is fine. So I guess I don't have a problem w/ someone being asked to pay a bit more if what they're doing is going to hog the bandwidth (and that would include me if I was doing bandwidth hogging things). Cheers. |
I am not torn on the issue. If you have 2 tier access and one is free for all and other one is pay for all there is no benefit for the Gold/Plats. If both are for pay and only the cheapest one is free for Gold/Plat then there is a benefit.
Just my opinion. |
I saw tiered internet service at a Novotel in southern France last week. I think it will spread to all "free" internet hotels. The days of people parking in front of CY's to pick up their WiFi is over.
With data caps on cellular data, forget trying to stream media in your room. |
Good God, Marriott just keeps thinking of reasons to alienate its bread and butter business travelers.
We're the ones that keep them in business, but we're the ones that are mostly likely to get banged with these fees, vs. the kettles who need to check facebook on Saturday night and can live with the near-dail-up-speeds.... |
This is a good way to make me even less willing to stay at a CY. Why should I stay at a CY with the crummy Bistro offerings and slow complimentary internet when I can go to a Hyatt Place that has a much better complimentary breakfast and free internet with faster connections? I know some CY properties still have the buffet, but Marriott is doing a good job of persuading me to cross CY off my list of properties to stay at.
I know there are more CY properties than HP, but in my case, I find plenty of HP properties where I travel. Hyatt and Hilton seem to be taking the opposite strategy of Marriott when it comes to free internet for elite members. Both companies will give the elite member the fastest internet available for free. |
Too many MRWD elites think they are entitled to everything being free, including high performance internet service. It is because of you and the massive downloads and video streaming that is causing the hotel industry to finally say "enough is enough." Reliable and fast internet service in a hotel is a huge expense for the owner, and it is about time that people start paying. I can assure you this is not a fad.

please enjoy all your future stays at the Hyatt Place of your choice.............
