Me too. I really don't get this obsession with suites - probably because I don't spend enough non-sleeping time in the room to care. But proximity to the lounge is a major advantage in my mind. I would happily take the most ordinary room if it is within a few feet of the lounge over a typical corner suite anywhere else in the hotel.
Even then it is no big deal. |
I can't see the attraction of a suite for a solo traveller, either. Mr HPand I only stay for leisure purposes though and as Mr HP has a disability that causes him to be ready for bed at 9pm a suite is an absolute joy to me! He can go to bed and I can stay up another 2 hours watching tv, reading the paper noisily etc. Sometimes he gets so exhausted he comes back in the middle of the day to sleep, so again it is of great benefit.
I never try for a suite if the hotel only has 1 or when I can't see any coming up on the booking screens. I usually send a polite e-mail, explaining the situation, to front desk manager and see what happens. I always says that I realise it is not part of the upgrade policy, but as a Plat I hope for a little extra if possible. One of our favourite hotels, where we say about 40 nights a year (not bad for a leisure stayer) has confirmed we will always get a suite, perhaps not their full 2 room one everytime. |

As a single occupant to a suite, but not necessarily solo traveler, it does come in handy. Quite often I travel with friends, but have my own room, and as such am technically not a solo traveler but do have a room/suite to myself. I find if I, or they, get upgraded to a suite then it come in handy as a gathering spot for the group. No matter the number of travelers it is also nice to have to entertain friends in the locale one is visiting as I will be doing later today when friends from High Wycombe come into London for the afternoon. Although on this particular trip I am not traveling alone, but in many cases I am. But it goes without saying that obsessing over a suite is pointless. If one needs a suite, then book it. If one happens to get upgraded so much the better. |
