turns out the hotel wasn't aware the service provider was doing this - once it was brought to their attention they immediately had the issue corrected

Assume that any "public" internet access is suspect. This is particularly true for wi-fi links - easily sniffed, and very easy to do a man-in-the-middle attack.

I had the support desk for the internet connection at one Marriott property tell me that I had to turn my computer firewall off (which would have given them and anyone else full access to my machine) because "we firewall, and you having a firewall on causes problems". I was looking for support as I couldn't set up a VPN OR an SSL connection.

That was when I started spending the money for a cellular wireless connection, and running a VPN connection full-time for internet access.

The hotel may not have known, and most internet providers won't tell you about the things they do.
