Reward cert used w/o request by Marriott?

I was looking at my Marriott reward activity for last year and just noticed something funny on my December stay.

I had a single day stay in Renaissance Times Square (NY) which was paid for by the corporate account. However, on my online activity, it shows "79L 2011 VISA FREE NIGHT CAT 1-4" and says "REWARD" rather than STAY. Did they use my reward certificate automatically? I am not sure what went on... but I do only have 326 points for that stay and it was atleast $350 for the room that evening.

Also, it shows that I was issued a 1-night cat 1-4 redemption cert on the same day in my unused certs.

Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks.

Since the Ren Times Square is a Cat 8 property, kinda hard to believe it was taken as an award for a Cat 1-4 VISA free night, but given that, hey, let them take the award and refund your $350+ as that would be the best deal you'll ever get using this award!

Company paid for it. I am just losing points and a cert here. Good for them though.

That entry is a reward that you earned not that they took it.

aolj is correct - that's not a record of redemption but rather of earning, and doesn't appear to be related to the stay made.

Since it seems Marriott didn't compute the points and stay credit properly, I'd recommend you send in (fax or e-mail) a copy of your folio/invoice from the stay and ask them to look into it. You should get the proper credit if you do.

it did happen to me, well - almost

I had used a Cat 1-4 night last week to book a guest room at a Residence inn. I sent an email to the GM requesting an upgrade to a 1 BR or higher to allow privacy for us and a teenager travelling with us. A couple days before check-in, received my Marriott Confirmation email (not directly from the GM, just the regular reminder type from Marriott) which showed that we were in a 2 BR suite and that a Cat 1-4 cert PLUS 20K points had been used for the upgrade. I called Marriott and they sorted it out. Had I not paid close attention and called, I might have been out 20K points. In future I will be sure to request "courtsey" upgrade to avoid similar possible confusion..
