Taste of Gold/Platinum
You are given gold/platinum status for 90 days, and you must complete a certain number of nights/stays to retain that status for the remainder of the year plus the following year. This promotion is targeted only.

Road to Gold/Platinum (a.k.a. Gold/Platinum Challenge)
Currently, this will allow you to move up one level with a shortened stay criteria. You have 90 days to complete 6/9 stays to receive Gold/Platinum status. If you do no qualify, you are eligible to start another challenge one year and one day after the 90th day of the challenge you just did. When you sign up, the MR CSR should tell you the date you are eligible to do another challenge.

FAQ

Q: What qualifies as a stay?
A: One paid night at a Marriott-brand (including Ritz-Carlton Hotels) hotel. Cash+points rate does not qualify. SPG hotels does not qualify (as of 03/2017). Some exclusions may apply, someone please help fill this in.

Q: Can I simply book multiple, consecutive one-night stays at the same hotel?
A: No.

Q: Can I jump between multiple Marriotts in the area?
A: Yes. As long as you book at least one night at each property. Special care must be taken if the Marriott properties are next to each other. They may share the same back-office. While you may book one night at each property on consecutive nights, which should count as two stays, it may only count as one stay. A call to Marriott Rewards should split them up correctly.

Q: Can I book multiple nights at different properties for the same night to get multiple stay credits?
A: No. Regardless how many different places you book for the same night, it all counts as one stay.

Q: Can I sign up for both Gold and Platinum Challenges at the same time?
A: No. Only one challenge per year.

Q: I'm Silver, can I do the Platinum challenge?
A: No. This is only a one-level promotion. You are only eligible for the Gold challenge.

Q: Can a non-elite do the Gold Challenge
A: No. Must be Silver.

Q: I just completed my 6th/9th stay. When should I see my new status?
A: Good job! Your new status should appear after your 6th/9th stay posts to your account.

Q: Can I book a meeting to get a stay credit?
A: No. You will only receive 10 night credits, not a stay credit.

Your idea is a good idea in theory, hopefully it works. As of a couple days ago it didn't work for me, though I went with a little different angle see blow. Good luck and please report back.
I'm Marriott Gold and just signed up for the Platinum challenge. Similar to other posters it requires 9 stays withing 90 days (though I'd read reports that you get 3 months plus the remaining month you sign up and this ended up being true). I tried to get them to start me October 2nd (hoping that the challenge would run through 1/31/18 and I could potentially get status until 2/28/20). After calling they told me even if my start date was in October the challenge would end, which would only get me status until 2/28/2019. I ended up accepting the challenge for 9/3/17 through 12/31/17. Platinum status should be good through 2/28/2019.

This is a very good data point, I had the same experience. So it's good to sign up at the beginning of the month as you'll get the current month plus the next 3 months.

I think you need to achieve status no earlier than March, not February, to get two years out of it

Hi guys.

I'm new to this forum and also to this points game so bear with me. I have the Marriott Premier Credit Card, automatic silver every year but I'm 15 nights short of gold this year so I want to try the gold challenge just to get the free breakfast haha and maybe a complimentary upgrade.

I'm always confused with the definition of stay. In Megabonus, it's "consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity." while for the taste/road to gold/platinum, a stay is one paid night. Does that mean I can stay for one night then check out and that counts as a stay?

I have a week of travelling on December and I want it to start by December 1. I called the customer support to sign me up and she obliged to sign me up although she can't set my start date to Dec 1 and I have to call again when I'm ready to start the challenge. And I also asked that if I completed the challenge by Feb 2018, I'll have status by 2020. Not sure if I misheard so I will try calling again to confirm.

Should be the same. A "stay" is the amount of time from when you check in to the hotel until you check out of the hotel, provided you don't immediately check in to the same property the next day. (One night counts as a stay in the Megabonus promotion too, btw.)

If you complete the challenge in 2018, you'll have status until 2020 (the rest of 2018 and all of 2019).

Thank you Diplomatico and sethb for the clarification! It's almost a year that I thought that a stay is two nights in the same hotel. haha! Good thing I asked. And looks like I can complete the challenge next year.

Unless the new program due to be instituted sometime next year states otherwise.
I've read Marriott statements on retention of lifetime status but not on standard status so although one can assume status quo one can't guarantee it.

I thought that for this to occur you had to achieve the status no earlier than 1 March. Are you saying achieving any time in 2018 (as early as 1 January), you get status through 29 February 2020?

Hey all!

Quick question. Anyone know what triggers the "Taste of" challenges to be sent as targeted promos? What causes you to get those instead of doing the "Road to..." promotions?

Thanks!

Pulled the trigger on this. Called in last week and rep gave me up until Dec 31 to complete 9 stays to get Platinum.

Will complete it by mid November.

I would be interested to know as well. I have a lot of stays coming up, so I would delay my 9th stay until after Jan if that's the case.

I don't know about the challenge. Earning status the regular way (you could earn it Jan 1 with rollover) any time during a year it's good the rest of that year and all of the following year (and a couple of months the year after that).

Hi all,

I am currently reviewing my loyalty programs due to changes in business travel dstinations. Marriott seems an appropriate option, and I have travel coming up starting next week Tue (2 stays booked already). Is there any way to get enrolled to any kind of platinum promo at the moment? I am currently on Gold level - if that helps.
Any advice is highly welcome :-)

Thanks

I think you can just call and ask to sign up for the Platinum challenge. Rest of this month, plus next 3 months.
