Using points to cover part of a stay?

We're planning a family trip to NYC in the fall - arriving Wednesday and departing Monday. My parents are not big travelers and only have enough points to cover 2 of the 5 nights. The weekend rate is significantly less, but only appears available online if you arrive Friday.

We are trying to figure out how likely it will be that Marriott would allow my parents to use points for the first two nights and then get the much lower rate starting on Friday, but not make them check out and check back in Friday? Obviously they want to pay as little as possible but do not want the hassle of moving rooms.

Should not be a problem at all, as long as you ensure that you have the same room type booked. Mention the two reservations as they check in, and most likely, they will get linked.

Agree with GenevaFlyer. Hotels are always happy to accomodate this sort of thing.

They will have no trouble reserving the room that way but I would call the hotel in advance to alert them that the reservations will be split between points and paid stay so that they wouldn't have to move rooms. They will link the reservation. Nine out of ten times they won't have to but it did happen to me once.

I am doing this right now. Sunday was paid, today and Tuesday are on points, the next two nights are paid. I do this frequently and only occasionaly have had to stop by the desk to have my keys recoded.

I've done this a TON of times; no problem. And I do it the exact same way; pts on high rates and pay for cheap nights.

Excellent advice, Bobette. It's not hard to get the two reservations linked together but it makes everything much smoother if it's done ahead of time.

Does this work at checkout as well?

No, you need to set it up as you plan to pay for it before your stay. You can't suddenly decide to change reservations retroactively.

Plus, if you do it at the end, you may be asked to move between each reservation, and if you are unlucky, will be stuck without a room between check-out and check-in times.

I've done this quite a few times; easiest way I've found is to not book at all on-line, but instead call Marriott and tell them what you want to do. Then it's one reservation before you walk into the hotel.
