Marriott to Remove Adult Content from New Hotel Rooms

Speculated here before, but this USA Today article confirmed with Marriott International that porn will not be available in new hotel rooms.

I never got the whole in-room pr0n thing myself, but the other thing I glean from this is that there's a new VOD platform coming to Marriott. (??) I don't even look at the movie offerings since the current platform is so far behind the technology curve, but I might if the new platform is comparable to some of the better online streaming services.

I doubt I'd ever pay $12.99 to see a first-run movie, but I'd probably pay $2.99 to see something farther out on the long tail. Seems like the technology should be there to serve both audiences.

I think that free in-room internet wiped out demand for pay porn tv channels.

I think everyone using the hotel internet to stream movies wiped out the available bandwidth in hotel internet.

Other industry reports indicated that the in-room, er, adult entertainment was very lucrative for a given property. I wonder how they plan to make up the revenue?

actual revenue wasn't a huge % of the total revenue - but there were free-be's given by the movie/in room entertainment companies which the hotels over the past few years have had to start buying again (in the past 4-5 years these systems went from buying new TV's for the entire hotel and free install to charging HUGE fees for just installing the system, a small 200 room hotel could easily be asked to pay $70K to install the system PLUS the cost of the TV's)

Aww, one of my wife's favorite past times when we check into a Marriott is to check the adult movie listings for the absolutely insane titles some of those, "films" have. It's good for a laugh.

The most amazing thing about the adult movies in hotel rooms is that they still show them, and charge so much, since nobody watches them! It's sort of like how do they afford the huge hotel resort buildings in Vegas since everybody "usually breaks even" on their gambling.

Actually, many hotels were quoted as saying that they receive a lot of additional income from the X-VOD movies.

That was my point my fellow SacTown resident.

Thought this post was about to go in the other direction...:p

Are they replacing it with escort service ? If it comes with 10 nights credit I would definitely approve it (foreign humor).

I think it's good that porn will no more be available on TV in Marriott rooms, and I would vote for removal of all VOD content, so that a possibility of wrong billing for these services (which I never use) would be eliminated.
