Best use of points

Couldn't find answer in search regarding best use of points. Reserved Wailea (Maui) resort view room for seven nights for 180K points for three weeks from now with the idea that I might add 50K for travel package that gives me 50K miles. A good use of points. But I'm concerned about using so many hard-earned points when the hotel hasn't been definite about upgrade possibility (I understand that) and I could get stuck with a lousy room. However, as insurance I'm thinking of booking the first five nights for 120K points and the last two for $296 (includes breakfast) in case I get a room that I don't like. I can remain in that room or cancel it and move somewhere else. Not that particular about a room -- just don't want to get stuck. Seems like it might be best to use more points when you know upgrade is coming. Thanks in advance for your suggestions

There are many, many threads here discussing best use of points. Did you try using Google to search this site? The IB search engine sucks.

In general the answer is specific to the individual and what they value. However, it is generally agreed that for most people the travel packages (maxing out miles at 120K) are a good value. As are European hotels. Merchandise generally terrible value. YMMV.

Thanks so much for responding

Thanks for the google search link. I searched the Marriott site on flyertalk and I believe they are having problems. Nothing showed. Should have turned to google.

I figure the travel package is the best way to go. But I can cash in for more miles next time. In this instance, I might go with five nights and pay two, because I could end up without an upgrade. I'd rather use more points when I have more confidence in an upgrade. I'll call the resort as I get close to deadline time with the certificate.

Again, my appreciation for your time and suggestions.

Here, let me Bing that for you: http://www.bing.com/search?q=best+wa...ox&FORM=IE8SRC

I like Gift Cheques. I get the best deal I can at the hotel, then redeem whatever batch of $1,000 worth I need (or can get) for 135K points. I used those to pay for anything I can charge to the room. In return I get MR nights credits and I earn points on the room charges. I've done things like stayed at an airport Marriott and used the park and fly promotion and paid with cheques. So I get a free room, perks and free parking for a week. I've charged theme park tickets, drinks, food, souvenirs, massages (for the wife), parking, dinner at Ruth's Chris (some Marriott's have them) and so forth. I refer to it as my Marriott play money.

Last year I redeemed $4,000 worth of gift cheques for 540,000 points. The only downside is they're only good for one year from issue date. But they never sit around my house that long.
