Restaurant Tax added to bill?

I just checked out of the Courtyard in Roseville, CA and I see a daily charge of $1.65 labeled Restaurant Tax on my bill. I booked a corp rate that did not mention anything about breakfast, but was given certs at check in for breakfast each day. I don't ever recall seeing this "tax" in the past. This is my first stay here, but I have stayed at the Fairfield Inn next door and they don't asses this fee. The breakfast is not that different, although it is presented much nicer at the CY.

I really get annoyed by all the undisclosed fees to lowball the base rate. I understand the business reasons for wanting to breakout the ancillary charges to entice customers, but it's really the "out the door" price that counts in the end. Now when they start the elevator usage fee I'll be checking out Winnebego rates!

Hmm, my corp rate includes breakfast and I've never been charged anything for it (other than any tip I may leave to be charged to the room).

I wonder if they billed you for breakfast, then removed the charge (like the do with internet at FS props), but the tax didn't remove? Only way to find out is to ask a manager at it.

Which Courtyard in Roseville, CA? I'm staying in the Courtyard Roseville Galleria Mall/Creekside Ridge Drive this weekend with a $20 voucher/free breakfast rate.

if your rate didn't include breakfast they might have comped you BF because of your status. CY don't have free breakfast, but some give out coupons to Golds/Plats. If this is the case I wouldn't complain about a dollar in tax, sounds like a fair value even for a CY breakfast ;)

I talked with the manager and he didn't understand it either so he did some research. The explanation came back that all their corporate rates include breakfast and they reduce the roomrate by the cost of breakfast and charge sales tax on the breakfast portion and room tax on the remainder. Although the bill shows the original room rate. This is a first for me.

Sounds way more complicated than it needs to be. And I'm not sure all the numbers add up. Now I do know you can file your sales tax based upon amount collected or as a percentage of gross sales. So if they don't breakout the breakfast portion, there's no tax due since there was no revenue earned.

Might be a good topic for an investigative reporter...
