Transferrring Marriott points ?
Fairly new to all this still but trying to figure out some things. Can marriott reward points be transferred to another marriott reward account? I am trying to find use for the remaining 450,000 points I have before even more points begin to hit my account in the next few months. I would like to transfer in bulk (50,000-125000 pts). I never realised how difficult it could be to use points!!!

Yes it is possible to transfer enough points from one account to another when ordering an award. Marriott's T&Cs state that spouses can do this, but in practice, Marriott will allow points from any two accounts to be used.
Give MR a call, let them know what award you want to order and that you would like to pull points from another account to be able to order the award. They will fax you a form that you will need to fill out and sign. You then need to give/fax the form to the owner of the other account. They can fill out the rest of the form and fax it back to Marriott. Once the form is received by Marriott, they will put the needed points into your account and order the award. |
The only catch is that only the points by which the receiver is short may be transferred--no more, no less. So your receiver may need to make some dummy res.es first!

I think im catching on.. in order to transfer, it must be for an existing reservation that they have. UGH! Its a shame you cant just "gift" points away!

My in-laws have transferred points to me in nice round numbers (and not the exact amount I needed...but close). So I don't know if that holds true.
However, what's to prevent the friend from making a reservation, the OP transferring the points, and then the friend canceling the reservation? Where do those points go? |

Bitburgr #5, nothing prevents it! Just wait a week or 3 before canceling. Hyatt has a similar transfer program & has been known recently to reverse transfers when the cancellation was so soon that it was an obvious workaround!
Also, Bitburgr, the Marriott rules do say "rounded to the next higher 1000." Ideally, I wish they would set up a Gift Registry where a member could ask a bunch of friends to contribute whatever points they have toward a vacation (honeymoon ?) Hyatt & CO already do this for cash contributions. |
