I've been offered it once, and was able to requalify afterward. Usually now they just do a promotion like, 'Stay X amount of nights, get Gold, etc). I actually had to call a few times and mention how much I was staying until I finally got someone willing to offer an immediate status match to me after faxing in a statement from another program. Not sure why most of the agents are so difficult about it, when they can clearly offer it.

I just called and they flat out said that they do not under any circumstance do status matching. I told the guy that is not what I understood.

I am Hyatt Diamond and am starting a new project in a city that does not have Hyatts, so I was looking to get status with another hotel chain.

I will call again later to see if I can get someone else to do it.

While it may happen once in a while, I do believe Marriott is pretty stingy with handing out status matches. You are much more likely to receive a status challenge of X nights within the next Y months.

Marriott rarely do status matches, mainly because their statuses are so much more demanding than any others, as they are soley on night stays. No other group requires anything like 75 nights to reach its top tier.

Against that Marriott do seem to be happy to offer status challenges which enable status to be obtained within 3 months.

So instead of calling I sent an email requesting that they do a status match or provide me with a challenge.

Got an email back stating they do not do challenges until October, but they would be happy to provide a status match if I sent them proof of my stays from last year.

So I emailed them back with proof. I had 68 nights with Hotels.com and 18 with Hyatt. I switched to Hyatt after they started thier FFN promo (stay 2 nights get one free). Plus Hotels.com changed thier policy on the max value of a free night which really screwed me, still very bitter.

Anyway, I get an email back from Marriott stating they can only match me to silver, based on my Hyatt nights, because I was not loyal to one brand.

hmm..really...if that was the case then why wouldnt you match me to Gold based on my hotels.com nights? So I emailed them back requesting Gold.

Response back..."No we can't. I'm sorry"

So Silver it is.

Hiya,

Just to add to the 'data' on this thread.

Requested a status match or challenge through the Marriott Rewards customer service form on their website 2 days ago and got a reply today. (hh diamond)

Result was gold status until July, with the challenge of staying 12 nights before July, in order to retain gold until Feb. If challenge is failed the status reverts back to original (of nothing).

Offered no proof of hhonors status or history however already have 8 nights booked into their system.

It seems to be pretty random through their email system as well as by phone. Good luck! :)

Also just to add;

I have been PT Mrt for 3 years, so my status at Hilton has slipped. Hilton just sent me the new HHonors blue card with this targeted promo;
April 1- June 30; 2 stays to regain silver, & 4 stays to reach my old Gold VIP status.

With the Hilton points now being diluted, i will stay with the consistancy of Mrt, and SPG is a definite 2nd.

Was Silver last year with 23 nights mostly if not all at a high-end high-rate JW property ...

Called MR and requested a status match or challenge late last December.

I was immediately given gold status with the challenge of staying 25 nights by March 31 in order to retain gold for the rest of 2010. As the others stated, if I didn't meet the challenge, the status would reverts back to Silver.

13 nights rolled over to this year so I was half way there. In Feb/March my stays were:

  • 1 night at Costa Mesa Marriott (to trigger megamiles earnings).
  • 7 nights at JW Marriott Bangkok
  • 3 nights at Marriott Resort & Spa Hua Hin
  • 4 more nights at JW Marriott Bangkok

for a total of 15 nights + 13 nights rolled over = 28 nights and clinched the Gold status. I called and asked for MR Platinum tier challange. I was told that I was only entitled to one challange per year but I also was told that my Gold status was good until Feb. 2012!!! Plus I earned about 13K AA miles with megamiles promo.

Thank you Marriott Rewards ^^^

IMHO, other than earning more points and dedicated line there isn't much difference between MR's Gold & Platinum status. At the above properties, as a Gold, I was upgraded and given access to executive lounge including full breakfast, happy hour, tea time, etc.
