Compensation for no hot water
Stayed at a Courtyard last - no hot water this morning.
When leaving, I asked what they would do in the way of compensation - she offered 5,000 points. I said I get that for the Visa twice, how about 50,000 - she laughed - we settled at 20,000.
I just checked my account and they only posted 12,000.
What is the compensation I should expect for something like this?

12k is fair, but depending on who was paying for the night and how much it was would be the deciding factor by me if I would simply ask to have the Night comped. But since Im usually on ElCheapo rates the 12k would probably have been a better choice
Dont know if I would have ever mentioned 50k or anything near that amount, unless thats the amount needed for a free night at that particuliar Hotel

When stuff like happens, it's not fault of the folks at the front desk - I never take it out on anybody - I'm very laid back.
I was just wondering what others thought of the given compensation.

You're laid back but you think you could get compensation for a temporary lack of hot water?
We lost hot water for about 8 hours at the Marriott Cairo last week. It didn't enter my mind that I should get compensated for it, and I don't even consider myself all that laid back... In fact, for actual issues I can probably be a bit of a pain. But a lack of hot water would not get my blood boiling, no pun intended...

12k points is about enough with the stay points for a free night so seems fair enough to me, there are certainly much worse things than a lack of hot water, on the other hand it is a significant loss of amenity so a 1-1 exchange seems a fair quid pro quo

In the US I do not expect to have to take a cold shower and I won't.
If I cannot shower before going to a client I'm not happy. It may only be "temporary" but if not resolved before I need to get to work it it doesn't matter if heat resumed an hour later.

Well I don't "expect" it either. I'm just saying that if you're fighting a battle over something as minor as hot water, it sounds like you're fighting a lot of little battles every single day. Doesn't that get tiring? What if your latte isn't perfect? What if your cab driver gets stuck in traffic? What if the pillows in the hotel room aren't arranged right?
We lost hot water for 8 hours at the Marriott Cairo last week. *shrug* I took a cold shower. I guess I should start writing letters demanding compensation for my awful experience.
I don't intend to be overly harsh on the OP - if it was a good-natured exchange and he got 12k at the end of it, great. It's 12k more than I'd expect, but I wouldn't refuse some free points either.

She pulled a sheet over that already had over a dozen room numbers and compensation listed at 7:15 am - I don't think I was out of out of line to ask a question.
If they had not had any hot water from noon to 8 pm - I wouldn't have said a word but I had a plane to catch.

I think 12K is plenty for no hot water. I had a fire alarm go off at 2:45 am on a recent Monday morning (I was getting ready for bed). Everyone went downstairs and it took about 15 minutes before we could go back to our rooms. Something had set off the fire alarm system.
I did not ask for any compensation, but I found it hilarious that one guy took his laptop and some luggage with him before leaving his room and going down the stairs. I do not recommend doing that in a real emergency.

If I'm in a major city in the US - or any city in the CONUS for that matter - I expect things like hot water to be something you can take for granted. Basic things like showering and shaving can be extremely difficult without hot water, and the duration of the outage, as the OP said, is irrelevant if I'm leaving for a client meeting or flight right away.
It's only happened to me once in the US, in Chicago, and the GM was certainly treating it as a serious issue - with very frequent updates given, and (I think) 20k points given as compensation without even asking.
I don't see what all those other "catastrophes" you mention in your post have anything to do with this, nor do I think it's right for you to make assumptions about the OP based on this.
Maybe you'd like to tell us about your experience in Cairo again?

Minor??? To me personally, the ability to shower is the second most important feature of a hotel (after the bed). Clearly, the hotel didn't provide an essential service despite taking customer's money for the room, so a comped room (or an equivalent amount of points) should be the least acceptable compensation.

A bed and a shower/bathroom is essential.

Whoa, the apologists are out in force today. Forgive me but if I'm paying for a hotel in a developed country I would qualify hot water up there with such amenities as a bed, electricity or a working TV.
To put it another way, if they advertised no hot water in advance, would you still stay there? I mean it's no big deal, right?
