Yes- there are absolutely no alcohol sales at all- and unlike some bans that take place with alcohol sales in Bangkok, this one is really very strict- almost all places are closed, and those that remain open are only selling water, coffee, and soda. Facebook is also blocked here at the moment for you social networkers. The Jazz is still going on however at the Living Room, and tonight was very good (the sparkling water was cold also).

Isn't the Asok room open for plats?

Hmm- in BKK they weren't adhering ~ 19:00, however around 20:00 it became quite strict everywhere. Very strong police presence last night throughout the centre. Today "the facebook" is working just fine.

Back to topic on the SGS- any timetable on rennovated rooms?

Here's a policy which might benefit from a rethinking. My average stay is nearly three weeks. So, while I'm a regular (3-4 stays per year and going up starting next month due to a change in my travel patterns), and probably have more total nights than many guests who have many more stays, my stay count is disproportionately low. OTOH, I do pay a remarkably low rate.

You're not missing much, Dr HFH. A leather notepaper holder, a calendar, etc. I received French champagne for each of 25th and 50th stays, but the regular way we are looked after is all we need, right?

Aren't you leaving out something? IIRC, you mentioned that you received an upgrade to a Theme Suite for your 50th stay. By the time I get to my 50th stay, I will have several times the number of nights that you did.

That said, though, you are correct. Guests are looked after remarkably well at the SGS. I used to holiday annually at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, Florida, and thought then that that was the epitome of service. Like many FTers, I've stayed at other top hotels all over. Yet, it's become clear to me that they all could learn a thing or two about service from SGS!!

Q: Why would the juice be eliminated now? Perhaps those that miss it can write a comment card? This hotel really does a great job of taking care of their customers.

Dear TRAVELSIG,

As always, I enjoy reading your comments.

I agree that it is a pity that the juice bottles are no longer available on the buffet table, but the supplier was unable to deliver. To compensate for this, we have introduced on the buffet additional four fresh juices in addition to the orange juice. This morning, we had longan, guava, water melon, and pineapple. These will change according to the season.

Special egg dishes such as Eggs Benedict we prepare to order and it is our practice to bring them to the table.

Thank you for your feedback.

Best regards,

Richard Chapman
General Manager

Thank You Mr. Chapman very much.

You run one of the best hotels in Bangkok and SE Asia- and it is always a pleasure to stay there.

Your staff at the Living Room on Saturday evening were also fantastic- as was the music- great class even if it was with mineral water (which is fine for me actually- it was sparkling).

Look forward to staying at your hotel again soon- really a top establishment.

Regards,

Travelsig

Starfruit?

Just a question..... Is starfruit out of season? Every time I've stayed here in the past, there was not only starfruit at the breakfast buffet, but also in the rooms. Noticed when I checked in yesterday there was neither.... No biggie, but it's just so good and sweet!
I also miss the bottles of lemongrass drink at breakfast..... But service here is top notch! Enjoying my stay!! I'm trying to eat as much gravlox salmon as I can in six days...... :p Between the breakfast buffet and BarSu in the evening, I could challenge a black bear during the spawning season.......

:D^ Yeah.... I know it's always a risk (my friends always think I'm living on the edge when I eat it :D ), but I've never run (ha ha) into a problem here at the SGS.....

Now the "salmon wrap" at a Thai restaurant in San Diego in back 2004, that's a completely different story!

But I just can't stop eating it!

Still the Place to be in Bangkok!

I bookended a SE Asian swing with two stays at the SGS in June. I'm happy to say, among all the great choices in BKK, I think the SGS is stiill the place to be for the following reasons:

1. The level of friendly welcome from doormen, to housekeepers, to desk staff to management. You are made to feel like you are coming home.

2. Well kept and relaxing facilities. Quiet in the quiet areas as opposed to the honking horn cocaphony of outdoor BKK.

3. Access to BTS - could it be easier? Right out the door directly to the platform.

4. Most relaxing spa and pool area around. You'd never guess you were in a concrete jungle.

5. Had two snafu's. One accounting error from SGS reservations prior to visit and one of my own making due to a family emergency during second stay. Both were handled well by management and became win-win situations. Often the depth of a good team is not that they are problem free but handle problems well when they occur.

6. Didn't get a chance to say hello to Richard Chapman, but saw him out and about from a distance- definitely an activist manager tending to his hotel! Contacted me twice by phone to make sure everything was OK. Missed connecting with him on my final day as he had a meeting away.

7. If you like jazz, the evening music is fun.

(On a side note, discovered Los Cabos mexican restaurant just around the corner a short block down Soi 14 "in a beautiful old colonial style Thai house that was previously the French ambassador’s residence." If you are looking for something casual and different, give it a try.)

At any rate, for my money, SGS continues to offer an excellent product. If you are on the fence and have not tried it, here's my encouragement.

Random Question:
Who gets escorted to their rooms and who doesn't (upon check-in)?

I cannot recall the last time I was escorted to my room... and yet today, when I was bringing myself up to my room after checking-in (suite), I noticed that the other two guests in the elevator with me were being escorted up by the front-desk staff.

Not that I need to be escorted up... but it does feel a bit odd being the only person in the elevator making my own way to the room.

What is the guideline? anybody know?

Dear jaejaez,

Please be advised that our standard operating procedure states that “all guests are to be escorted to their rooms, provided that there are sufficient associates available”. In this particular case, three out of the four Front Desk associates were escorting guests to their rooms. Regrettably, we were unable to provide you with this service.

May I thank you for your understanding and my apologies for any inconvenience.

Thanks for that Mr. Chapman. I guess I have just been unlucky. I don't mind it so much though - but for those who does care about such things it might be an idea for the FO agent to communicate this to the guest (somehow) so that they do not end up feeling '2nd class' perhaps?

Best regards,

One suggestion jaejaez- ask to be escorted on your next checkin. I actually don't like to be escorted- I have somehow made it thousands of miles through trains, planes, automobiles and who knows what other forms of transport- I can make it to the elevator bank and my room OK. But for some people it is very important- I would just ask if I were you- I think the GM has a number of things to work on at a large hotel like this.
