Hallo lurker,

as the new building is now open, what changed regarding the upgrade pool? Because the new deluxe rooms with dom view are more expensive then the old corner suites and also look much more modern and thus nicer. Can I request one of these as an upgrade?

Regards

Carsten

Nothing has changed. Corner suites only; of which, there are seven total.

thanks, two questions:

So only the old corner suites are in the upgrade pool and none of the new corner suites?

But as the new deluxe room with dom view is a category below the old corner suite I can request this as an upgrade instead, right?

That would be my best guess.

I don't see why not. You could ask for a new corner suite as well, if you so desired.

Spent two nights here earlier this month. Probably the best located hotel in the city for the tourist. My room was not ready when I arrived from Dusseldorf around noon by train (a short walk from the station) so I checked my bag and just started on the museum circuit. There are so many to visit within a few blocks, let alone the cathedral. Returned a few hours later and was escorted to my room overlooking the square. (Being on my own, suite was not really of interest to me.) Nothing special otherwise, but large and comfortable. As a Plat received a drink voucher for the Ustinov Bar on the main level which I actual took advantage of before my train back to Dusseldorf (and the Sheraton where I overnighted before my flight back to NAmerica). No coffee maker or kettle in the room, so had to head to the Nespresso store on the other side of the hotel for my morning jolt of caffeine. Pretty much a classic European property and a real deal on Cash & Points if you're planning to visit this city for the first time.

Awesome December Stay

Ms. Bartel and Dieter at the front desk were wonderful. The property had fabulous Platinum recognition and even had a couple small treats for my little boy.
Only negative is the smoke from the bar and fills the lobby/entrance area.
Can't wait to make a return trip here.

Beat the timer rate of Euro 119,- is currently available for most days until the end of April.

Very solid offer.

Room Recommendation: Deluxe or Corner Suite?

For folks who may have stayed here recently, any recommendation of a Deluxe over a Corner Suite (or vice versa)? Both rooms I'm looking at have catherdral views, and are nearly identical in size. From what I understand, the Deluxe is newly renovated, the Corner Suite not. Prices are nearly the same for both rooms (about 10 Euros more for the Corner Suite), whereas the price on a Deluxe Corner Suite goes up an extra 210 Euros.

Given that both are about the same size and similar views, I'm leaning towards the Deluxe over the Corner Suite given that it's described as newly rennovated.

Can anybody provide any recent first-hand experience with either of these room types? Thanks very much.

Currently at the Dom. Nice old-world hotel. As a Gold, upgraded to Executive room which is a large room looking over the Dom plaza. Public parking garage underneath the hotel.

Excellent hotel, fantastic location

Just completed two nights staying on SPG points. Did not receive a suite, likely prefer the Deluxe Dom room we were given anyway (no rooms were available for booking on SPG.com for a couple of weeks leading up to our stay, so they may have been sold out). We are in the new section, the room is very modern and has large windows overlooking the Dom plaza. Great view. Based on pictures on SPG.com, I think the new section of the hotel is better, especially if you get a plaza view. I believe I read the original section of the hotel is scheduled for remodeling in the near future, further suggesting those rooms are likely a little tired.

Staff has been very pleasant and helpful. Chose the platinum breakfast and would do so again...extensive buffet, omelet station, champagne included.

One tip that will be helpful for those driving a car to the hotel - when you arrive, it looks like you can't drive up to the hotel or access valet parking because the hotel is set back on the plaza. If you find the taxi stand, you are in the right place and from there you can drive onto the plaza and go around to the other side of the hotel to the main entrance. Being Americans in a foreign city, never presumed you could drive on the plaza (there are no signs that we saw). We assumed it was pedestrian only. So, you can either drive on the plaza or go directly to the ramp under the Cathedral (which is not marked as a hotel ramp) and enter the hotel from the underground ramp.

I second the excellent location of this hotel. We arrived by train and it was easy walking distance. Train is on one side of the cathedral and the dom is on the other. Maybe 400 meters from train exit to Dom.

Please pay attention, the cathedral is called Kölner Dom or even only Dom and the hotel is called Dom Hotel. So if you ask for the Dom you will be showed the way to the cathedral. BTW the place in front of the cathedral is called Dom Platte.

The unrenovated rooms are actually not in bad shape at all. It has the old world decor but I certainly didn't think it was due for a renovation.

Great reviews! Looking forward to my stay this weekend, provided LH decides to get me there.

Question: What sort of internet connection options are there in a guest room... both wired and wireless? (and is it uber slow?)
