I have been trying to find the answer to this question after hours of searching-- is it confirmed that if you cancel the SPG Amex card, or the Chase Marriott Visa, that the elite nights that came with each stick around? Or do they get removed?

Back in Mar 2016 I applied for the then Starwood SPG Amex cards, and later on closed them in May 2017. Am I eligible for the new SPG Marriott bonuses? Would I violate the Amex "once in a lifetime per product" rule?

I don't know if it's been "confirmed", but none of my elite nights have been reduced after I cancelled a credit card that generated them.

Any body have a guess what the new offer will be on the Business SPG card? I have the personal now, got it about 2 months ago and already hit bonus. My wife has the business card got about a month ago and has the bonus. I don't really want it right now but don't want to pass up 100k points.

SPG Annual free Nights?

Hi,
I couldn't find this already on the board, although it probably is.
Now that the SPG cards award a free night every year, how do we find those nights?
Shall I assume I have none, because this benefit just started a couple of months ago?
I found and used my Marriott nights, but that was always a feature of the Marriott cards.

Thank you.

That's a real good question. I was charged the annual fee over two weeks ago on my SPG AmEx card, but no free night has appeared in my account yet.

Here are the terms and conditions of the Free Night Award:

"Free Night Award (up to 35k points)
Each year, after renewal of your Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card, you will receive one Free Night Award from Starwood Preferred Guest®. The Free Night Award can be redeemed for a one-night stay inclusive of room rate and applicable taxes at participating SPG® and Marriott Rewards®hotels with a redemption level at or under 35,000 points.

The Card Member may be responsible for payment of additional mandatory resort fees at properties where resort fees are applicable, and is responsible for all incidental charges. This benefit is only available to the Basic Card Member on the Card Account.

The Free Night Award will be automatically deposited into your loyalty member account within 8-12 weeks after your Card Account anniversary date in the form of an e-certificate. You will receive an email from SPG to the email address listed on your loyalty member account confirming that the Free Night Award e-certificate has been deposited into your loyalty member account. The email will also provide instructions on how to redeem your Free Night Award e-certificate. To redeem the Free Night Award e-certificate, you must log into your loyalty member account and apply the e-certificate during booking. The Free Night Award e-certificate will expire after 1 year from issuance. E-certificates may not be transferred, extended beyond the expiration date, or re-credited for points. To qualify for the Free Night Award, your account must be open and not in default at the time of the Free Night Award e-certificate issuance. Please visit spg.com/cert for a list of participating properties.

American Express is not responsible for fulfillment of Free Night Award e-certificate redemptions. Redemptions are subject to the terms and conditions of the loyalty program."

I sincerely hope this helps.

Thank you. I called, and the person who answered really didn't know. She said to ask Amex.

Starwood Amex thinks Courtyard by Marriott is a "timeshare"

I am having a weird problem with my Starwood credit card. I recently stayed at the new Courtyard by Marriott property in Ciudad Juarez and charged the stay to my Starwood credit card. I noticed that I was not credited with the 6 miles per dollar spent directly with the Marriott property that I should have been. So I opened a case with AmEx and they said they would check with Marriott.

Well today I got a message from Amex saying the property was a "timeshare" so I do not qualify for points. This makes no sense as a Courtyard by Marriott is not a timeshare.

The problem seems to be that the property is charging things using the franchisee's name and it doesn't say Marriott Hotels, but the charge comes up as Imobilaria CC on my credit card statement. Amex insists that this is proof that I not make a charge directly with the hotel, but rather at a "timeshare." This makes no sense - this is simply how this Marriott charges credit cards.

Does anyone have any idea of how on earth to resolve this?

Do you have a copy of the folio? Dunno if submitting it to AMEX would help but that's what I'd try.

Question Devaluation of SPG Amex points earning rate?

So, I've read multiple threads on the Starwood Marriott merger and maybe I missed the thread where this is discussed. If I understand correctly:

1 Starpoint is now 3 Marriott points
When I stay at a Starwood property, I used to earn 2 Starpoints per dollar spent and now I earn 6 Marriott points.

But now I'll earn 2 Marriott points per dollar spent on everyday purchases. Shouldn't it be 3?

Seems like a big devaluation in points earning power. Yet I'm not seeing any discussion about this. Why aren't tons of FT Amex SPG card holders cancelling their cards? Could somebody please point me to the relevant threads or tell me what I'm not understanding?

Thank you very much.

You apparently have missed the never-ending thread discussion about mass SPG AmEx cancellations, and/or less usage of the card for everyday spend...it has definitely been discussed

Hi UA-NYC. Thanks for your reply. I've seen many threads about elites boycotting until IT/CS issues are fixed, about elites losing late checkout benefits, about elites wanting to be called Platinum versus Gold, etc. I looked in multiple threads and forums.

What I didn't see is a discussion about the devaluation of earning power for everyday spend. And what loyalty programs and credit cards non-elites are now considering and why. If you could point me to those threads and/or posts, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you Zorak! I haven't posted for a while and it's a bit overwhelming to sort through all the overlapping threads. Your post was exactly what I was looking for! ^
