Seclusion Day Information: March 9, 2016

Nyepi, known as the “Day of Silence,” marks the celebration of the Balinese New Year in the Hindu Lunar calendar. A spectacular procedure of ceremonies, parades of great bamboo monsters, and fireworks occur on the Eve of Nyepi, followed by a day of total silence and seclusion. The community strongly believes that if the island is silent and dark, the bad spirits will leave and the new year will start in peace. During Nyepi, from 6am until 6am the next day, the island stops. Nobody is allowed in the streets, use of electricity is restricted, and the international airport is closed.

In 2016, Nyepi will fall on Wednesday, March 9. Please note that check-in and checkout will not be possible on Nyepi Day, and Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) will be closed. Some of the resort facilities will operate as usual; however, there will be no transportation services to and from the resort, and televisions will not be available. Lights will be dimmed inside and there will be no outdoor lighting. Our pools and garden areas will still be accessible except for the beach. Only indoor seating will be available at Boneka Restaurant. Gourmand Deli will close at 8pm. King Cole Bar will remain closed.

We kindly invite you to respect this sacred day and observe these restrictions. Normal activity in Bali will resume at 6am on Thursday, March 10.

Currently at the st. Regis bali. Booked via FHR, the check in guy said this property does not upgrade platinum guests but since my booking is with FHR, they would upgrade me to the plunge pool suite.
Plat amenity is the 30 min massage for 2.

I'm planning on spending August 6-8 at the St. Regis before moving on to the W and Four Seasons (no Starwood option in Ubud at that time unfortunately). Right now the book in advance rates are 451/night for the St Regis Suite and 577/night for the plunge pool suite. Can anyone comment on whether I should expect better pricing if I hold off, or bite the bullet and book one of these?

This doesn't address your question, but the aware that the four seasons is fairly far from the center of Ubud. Personally I would consider something like Komaneka Bisma if you'd like to be central. Good luck.

We had a plunge pool suite and rarely used the pool. We've used them a lot elsewhere, so it's not that we're not "pool people." We usually ventured out to the [amazing] lagoon or to the beach. For a short stay, you might find the extra dough worth it, but I certainly wouldn't pay an extra 150+ per night for a longer stay.

Enjoy the stay!

Really? Googlemaps says four seasons sayan is 12 minutes by car from Ubud center. Is this not realistic?

Looked into Komaneka Bisma - beautiful, however no availability on our dates. Any other suggestions?

Ubud has really developed. It isn't walkable, you'll need a car service. This isn't expensive, but if you are headed to, say, the restaurants close to Monkey Forest, it could easily run 30 minutes of stop and go traffic. Don't get me wrong, FS Sayan is gorgeous. If your plan is to mostly hang at the resort, then don't hesitate. But if plan is to explore Ubud and have the luxury of swinging back to the property to freshen up, I think you'll find the destination less than optimal. It really depends what you are into. Send more details on what you hope to do in a Ubud, maybe I can make more suggestions.

We left ubud about a week ago and stayed at the hanging gardens. It was about 30 min from ubud but was totally worth the distance. The hotel has a complimentary car service that runs daily from about 9 to 5:30. After 5:30 the hotel has local drivers that will take you round trip for $32 US. We used the driver for dinner two nights and he waited on us while we dined. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful and incredibly peaceful. I recommend it if you're looking to be close enough to walk around ubud, but far enough to escape it when you need to. Just an FYI, there is a bit of construction going in at the spa at the moment, but they offered guests 50% off treatments as compensation.

I recently did St. Regis + FS Sayan combo. FS Sayan is a short ride from Ubud center. They have complementary car service to Ubud center. I believe it runs on the hour from 9 to 6 or something like that.

I took a taxi back to the FS from Ubud center a few times at night and it was like $7-10 one way back. You have to haggle a bit (the hotel tells you how much it should be and you tell them that's how much you are going to pay)

the westin is also spg hotel. considering i'm going to be in bali for 3 and 1/2 weeks. i can't justify paying st. regis $450 per night price tag when the westin is $140.

this makes zero sense to me why anybody would pay this.

isn't the westin just as nice?

There are lots of reasons. That's why they have different hotels at different price points. And while I have not been there, I'd say that it is unlikely that the Westin is "just as nice."

A Maserati and a Civic can both drive 60 miles per hour. Isn't the Civic just as nice? In all seriousness, the SR is in a league of its own, once you accept the fact you're in Nusa Dua. Completely different clientele too. You get what you pay for, $450 is a great rate IMO.

i think your being a little facetious. perhaps your just kidding.

i don't plan on going all the way over there and spending time gazing at passersbyers as they come through the hotel and i sure as hell don't want to socialize with strangers or meet new people. nor do i sit at bars waiting for a voluptuous brunette to tap me on the shoulder and invite me up to her room.

i'm not looking for the vacation to hit me in the face, i'm looking to hit it...

i want to go to the beaches and get absolutely shacked by perfect ten point overhead swells; after all keramas beach and other surf spots is what i'm ultimately there for.

i'm just not a $450 a night kind of guy and for the record i drive a $50k range rover but cannot justify spending that amount of money over the course of 18 to 20 days.

anything short of this in terms of days from the east coast is a complete waste of time IMHO.

westins in the united states provide enough amenities and privacy for my liking. if this one provides at least this i will be happy. it looks really nice from the videos and pictures.
