We did almost a week at the Ren last June, Plat, using points. As others have mentioned - no upgrade. The hotel is in a great location for sightseeing and transportation (main train station), but can be stupidly expensive in summer justifying the points needed. We enjoyed the lounge - good variety at breakfast, teatime and evening, however it can get very packed. Lounge staff vary from surly to extremely pleasant. There's one in particular that can be a little gruff... you'll have no trouble identifying her.

Wow! The recent experiences contradict ours.

Our experience in October (we were upgraded, had great interactions with all staff and breakfast in the lounge was good) was so great that I booked it for my husband's July 4, 2019 birthday while we were there. We love the location!!! My husband, who has been to Amsterdam quite a few times, loves that it is close to everything but feels "tucked away".

I'll report back mid July.

I had a recent 2 night stay. My SNAs did not clear, so at check-in I politely asked if I might be able to upgrade to another suite. The Royal Suite (56 sq m) was showing as available online but the agent told me it was booked for my 2 nights. My Ambassador status was acknowledged and I was told I would have access to the Club Lounge. I inquired whether breakfast in the restaurant was an option. The agent first said no, but then she said she could give me vouchers for the breakfast buffet.

We were upgraded to a Deluxe room, but it was rather small. A few hours after check-in, I sent a Chat message to the hotel asking if I could upgrade to the Royal Suite. Agent said yes, no problem for an additional 270 Euros/night. Either the FD lied or someone canceled their reservation. A bottle of Prosecco was delivered to the room as a welcome amenity.

The lounge was poor. On the first night, we arrived at 7:10 (food is taken away at 7:30), but anything that was empty was not replenished. There was very little left that was vegetarian, and when I asked the attendant if I might be able to get something, she waved me off and told me that was all that was available. She pointed to some bowls of hummus, pesto, etc but the bread was all gone, so there was nothing to have it with.

Restaurant breakfast was OK, but there were lots of people with bad manners eating there (eg putting their hands on the bread to slice it, even though there was a napkin right there). Also one lady reached into the waffle bowl with her hand! On Saturday and Sunday morning, the lounge breakfast is served in the restaurant, so the vouchers the FD gave me were only required for one day.

For some reason, there was a smell of raw sewage in the lobby area through most of our stay. One day, someone had spritzed the area with cologne or something to try to mask the smell.

Location is great for proximity to train and things to do, but otherwise, I wouldn't rate this property very highly.

Does anyone have experience with the room type "Family Connecting Room, Larger Guest room" at the Renaissance Amsterdam?

I booked reservation under this room type (through the Citi Prestige Concierge) and it appears in my Marriott account as 2 separate reservations with different confirmation numbers and no obvious linkage. While I presumed it would simply be 2 rooms that connect, I'm confused by the separate confirmation numbers with different room types (both in terms of not the stated "Family Connecting Room" and different from each other - one a REN Room, Larger Guest room and the other a Deluxe Room, Guest room).

The second room does appear to have no room rate attached, so, maybe that's the linking?

Anyway, I'm a bit confused and would appreciate reports from others.

I’m having a very disappointing stay at this hotel.

The positives:
  • Great location
  • Friendly staff
  • Decent lounge
The negatives:
  • No room upgrade
  • Arrived yesterday at noon, and although my room was vacant it was not clean, which is completely understandable given my early arrival, but it took 2-1/2 hours for them to clean the room. Yes, this is a very busy time in Amsterdam, but you’d think they could prioritize cleaning a room for a waiting guest.
  • Spent the day today walking around Amsterdam. Returned at 4:00pm to find that my room hadn’t been cleaned. Put in an urgent request for housekeeping to clean it, and it still took 45 minutes for them even to show up.

You're making me lean toward the Marriott for my pre- and post-cruise stays next year, Blumie, despite what appears to be a superior CL at the Renaissance...

For my last two nights in Amsterdam, I moving around the corner to the Klimpton.

The CL here is decent, But not so much so to endure an otherwise mediocre property (the well meaning staff notwithstanding).

I haven't been to the Amsterdam Marriott in 3+ years, but from what I remember, it had a better CL than the Renaissance. I'll be at the Marriott next month, so I'll get a chance to review it again.

This hotel is an Epic Horror in desperate need of a Re-do. The rooms are small with mystery smells.....heating and AC is inconsistent and the lounge is a Madhouse of people grasping for everything "free" they can get....kids families noise ugh. Over the years I tried this hotel 3 times and each time it was just worse and worse. Amsterdam is a wonderful city with fantastic food and drink, I think you miss out by eating or drinking in the lounge here, there is so many places just around the corner. The only reason I would recommend this hotel under any circumstances is the location........close to everything in a great area. Otherwise, Pay and pick a better hotel....this is one of the worst in this town....... Safe travels!

Wow, I am so glad that these posts weren't here when I booked my wife and son for a few nights here. They really enjoyed their stay. They felt the upgraded room was fine for a downtown location, the lounge was good, and the service warm and friendly. These are all personal opinions, but they especially loved the location and would revisit with no second thoughts.

I am also surprised with negative experience mentioned recently. I stayed there with my family in 2016, and we liked this hotel very much. We had a "Family Larger Room", which was on the top floor and large by European standards. The room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The FD people were nice and the location was perfect. We will definitely return to this hotel should we ever visit Amsterdam again.

I am guessing that may be the CL was the problem, because most of the issues mentioned were related to the CL. We usually enjoy our meals outside the hotel.
