Sheraton Luxor, Egypt [Master Thread]

I stayed just for 1 night in this charming hotel, located on the banks of the Nile river.
See my photos http://www.e-traveller.net/pics/2004/luxor-sheraton.php

This hotel was rather olddated but charming. A very nice lady at the reception, mrs. Hanan, took care of my wishes to have a room with a View on the Nile. When checking in, there was no room with a view available, but after she made some arrangements she made me a happy SPG! :D It was great she managed to give me my preferred room. She escorted me to my room and asked if everything was fine.
During my stay she appeared to be very helpful and friendly :-: , even while the hotel was very crowded and busy.

The room had a classic interior and was rather small. There was a small desk, two single beds, a chair. The toilet was separated from the small bathroom, that was ok. And there was hot water for my bath, so I was happy.

The view on the river Nile was breathtaking, especially at sunrise :) . There was a very small balcony to step outside.

The hotel has bungalows in a garden, you will find a nice Italian restaurant here. It is possible to dine outside.

At the back of the hotel is a large terrace with comfortable chairs. You can have a nice view on the Nile here. On the level of the river Nile is a round swimming pool with a sun deck, and a bar with a terrace . Here you can have a lunch or just a drink while enjoying the view on the Nile.
Personnel of the bar is friendly, but can sometimes be rather slow in service in the evening.

The variety of the breakfast buffet is not as large as in the Miramar, but still has a lot to offer. In the evening there is a buffet served. Prices tend to be relatively higher here than in the Miramar. Quality of the food was ok, however not the quality I am used to in the Starwood hotels :( .
The restaurant was very crowded with package tourists, there was a line of guests waiting when I left. Waiters could be nervous and had a hard time in coping with service to the guests. The atmosphere was therefore not very relaxing. However in general the personnel was very friendly. I even received a free capuchino to go with my cake from a waiter from the bar.
There was an a la carte restaurant inside the hotel, an Indian restaurant, available.

When I will return to Luxor again, I definitely will come back to this charming hotel. And hopefully mrs. Hanan is still there, a receptionist who knows how to make a Starwood guest happy :) !

Been?!

I'll be going back the the Sheraton Luxor for the 4th time in 4 years, in October. I can't say enough good things about the Sheratons and their staffs throught Egypt.

It's not like a St Regis in NYC or LA, but then you're not in NYC or LA. You're in a small rural village in a developing country, with a lot of political and economic problems. Once you get past that, the quality and value of Sheratons in Egypt are amazingly good.

(If you've been searching, you've probably already stumbled on my past trip reports from Egypt.)

Your welcome.
Hope you will have a nice stay in the Sheraton Luxor. It is not the most luxury hotel of the Luxor hotels but it has such a nice atmosphere. I like the terrace with view on the Nile very much.

Did you make reservations for a room with a view...?

Decent availability now through April 2006

Wanted to provide a current update.

I was planning a trip in April 2006. The availability both for awards and for discounted pricing on SPG.com seems very good. SPG award was showing availability of smoking rooms but calling customer service (I am SPG Plat) provided availability for a range of rooms. 50% off rack-rate and upgrade awards were available as well.

The pricing was decent ($52 for basic and $83 for Nile view). I presume that there will be Platinum upgrades left by the time arrive based on overall high availability.

I was given a Platinum upgrade at this hotel without having to negotiate. The suite consisted of two identical connecting rooms, both with Nile view and one of which had been outfitted with a sofa, table, etc. I was actually charged a relatively high rate for this 'upgrade' and didn't even notice because the bill was in Egyptian currency. After a few e-mails, the hotel manager arranged for a refund to my credit card, with no need for intervention by Starwood.

Just one word of caution: during my stay the swimming pool became very obviously polluted. The hotel staff tried to solve the problem by throwing in more chemicals, but the result was even worse. Perhaps the problem has been solved by now.

Never been there, and this is the Sheraton Luxor in Luxor, Egypt.. Not the Las Vegas Hotel (which isn't a Sheraton) ;)

The hotel is a category 1 hotel... So, not certain it is a resort :) (it does state it is a resort)..

I was looking on TripAdvisor.com and noticed a Feb 1,2006 Review... (I quote below...)

Hotel has good points and weak points. It has good external areas with a great view from the pool area over the Nile. There is good service for food in the open overlooking the pool and Nile. The hotel also has reasonable Italian and Indian restaurants.
Weaker points are mediocre buffet restaurant, hotel is tired and some areas need a refurb. Perhaps the worst point is the hassle if you want to walk outside the hotel. We found it worse round the Sheraton than in the centre of Luxor.
So if you want to stay around the hotel and use as a base for excusions via coach or taxi, this could be for you. If you like to walk around and are not into hassle, I would advise you look into one of the town centre hotels.
Final points - if you are on a package be careful as to what is included in any half board. The one we took expected you to take the meals in the buffet restaurant which was not to our taste. If you used the Italian or Indian restaurant you only got a small deduction from the bill. Check your hotel account carefully - all our dinners were on it despite being on half board. No hassle to get it changed, but it took time.

I recently stayed at the Sheraton Luxor. The renovation mentioned by earlier posters is complete. The lobby and pool area are nice.

However, the rooms donīt seem to have been updated. The power went off two out of the three nights I was there for multiple 3-4 minute episodes. As I gold member I got upgraded to a nile view and had a welcome platter of fruit. Overall I wasnīt too impressed by the hotel.

Refused Confirmed Suite Upgrade at Luxor Sheraton

I reserved a room at the Luxor, Egypt, Sheraton several months ago, and last week, 5 days proior to my arrival, I called Starwood to try to take advantage of the suite upgrade for points option, even though the last time I had inquired, the customer service agent with whom I spoke candidly said she had never seen one become available at ANY location in the 2+ years of her employment.

To my surprise and delight, the agent said that the Royal Suite was available as an upgrade option, 3,000 points per night. I jumped right on it, and immediately received an email from Starwood confirming the Royal Suite (two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, jacuzzi, etc.) as my new booking. 9000 points were withdrawn from my account.

When we arrived at the Sheraton Luxor, the desk agent was completely unaware of any upgrade. He called his supervisor, who called his manager, etc., etc. I provided a copy of the email confirmation of the upgrade.

Long story short, with great apologies and wringing of hands, management said that Starwood had made a terrible mistake, and that there was simply no way they would allow a point upgrade to such an expensive suite, no matter what Starwood had said. They said they would return 9000 points to my account (which they did) and offered me a Junior Suite (a rather shabby one at that, but with a good Nile view).

I took all of this with good grace at the time - I was there to see Egypt, not a hotel room, and by the way, Luxor and environs is spectacular!

I did get a minor upgrade, perhaps 1 step above what I would have gotten anyway as a Starwood Gold member. But I remain annoyed at Starwood's getting my hopes up for nothing.

What would you do if you were me?

Dave

If it were me, easy, I would contact Starwood Customer Service by e-mail so they could open a case and look at it officially. This way they will get to the cause of the error and fix it if was a systems issue or coach it if it was a human issue. You never know, you may recieve some points for your experience or simply an apology but I'm sure they will take the time to find out what happened and respond.

The sticky at the top of this page gives the contact information.

OP's Update

Several emails with Starwood, to the effect that they were looking into it with the hotel. No replies since. Of course.:td:

Has anyone stayed at the Sheraton Luxor recently? We are planning on staying here for a few days later this summer. I am a SPG Platinum.

We will probably take a sleeper train from Cairo. Can anyone tell me how much a cab ride is from the train station to the hotel? Any recomendations for family friendly/reasonably priced places to eat in Luxor?

Is there a club lounge for breakfast? The SPG website mentions "Guest Room Renovations May 1 - December 31, 2008". Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks,

Onedog

Hi Onedog,

I will answer this part: there are renovations being carried out at the moment in some of the guest rooms located at the main building.
