any preferences especially regarding Club Floor and lounge at each?

I have not been at the Renaissance in AMS but I have stayed at the Marriott. The club lounge is very good and the concierges are extremely helpful. The rooms are fairly standard with no outstanding characteristics except for windows that open. The main feature of the Marriott however is its location smack across from the Leidseplein and a short walk from the most important museums, shopping area, and Concertgebouw.
Look these up in a guidebook and I think that you will probably choose the Marriott strictly for the location unless you have business close to the Renaissance.

spend half my life there, the renaisance is far better. Had a bit of luck with one of the receptionists, but thats another story

Where is the AMS Rennaisance located?

I tried the special at the Beverly Hills Rennaisance Club level last weekend at $159.00 with dinner credit.

Weak lounge service at cocktail hour. Good continental breakfast. A little pricey. But it is BevHills! THe only minus was the mattress quality, but I slept well.

Amsterdam: Marriott or Renaissance?
 

Does anyone out there have an opinion about which hotel is better in Amsterdam: the Marriott or the Renaissance?

I stayed at the Renaissance Amsterdam last October for two nights. Visited the Marriott while in town, but cannot offer any observations on the accommodations there.

In my opinion, the Renaissance was alright, but not what I expected, as it is rated a Five Diamond property. The location was great, however. Within 3-4 minutes of the train station and the major thoroughfare of street level storefronts, pubs, and restaurants. Not very far from the Red Light District, either. I did venture over there on the first night, out of curiousity more than anything else.

The rooms there are clean and adaquately appointed, but nothing special. The corridors are brick, which is kind of cold, I think. We made use of the lounge on the 6th floor which has a reception in the evening.

The two hotels are about a 10-minute trolley ride apart. The Marriott is right across from the main casino in Amsterdam.

Location wise I give a thumbs up to the Renaissance.

I disagree strongly with AtlMan. It is hard, actually nearly impossible, to improve on the location of the Marriott which is right across from the Leidseplein and very close to the major museums, the best shopping district, and the Concetgebouw. If you use the search function, you will find a lot of information on this subject.

I have to agree with Monitor- stayed at both. Marriott on my first trip and the Ren on my second trip (just to see what its like). After two days, I was wishing I had stayed at the Marriott. However, I guess as long as I was in Amsterdam is was not too bad.

The Marriott is indeed in a good location, but the rooms are generic American. If you want something a little more special, you have to go outside the Marriott chain.

Stayed at the Amsterdam Renaissance last week for 5 nights on an award certificate. The hotel has a large comfortable lobby and there were always many staff around the lobby at all hours which made the place feel quite secure.

The hotel is a short walk (5 minutes) to Centraal Station for the trains or any trams.
You can also walk through the alley to Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal to the tram lines stop, about three-four minutes. The large Albert Heijn supermarket Food Plaza is about a 15 minute walk across from the Koninklijk Palace.

The hotel is surrounded by coffeeshops and sex shops. This was a change from other locations, the Sheraton Pulitzer and Hilton, where we have stayed before. If you are looking to stumble out the door and get wasted or go window shopping and stumble back to the hotel again then this is a great location. If you are in Amsterdam for the museums, then the Marriott is probably a better choice.

Spuistratt which borders the hotel has the Bulldog coffeeshop and several others. Several of the alleys off Spuistraat have windows with ladies to view in the evening hours. These sights are on several of the approaches to the hotel. It took us a couple of days to figure out how to get back to the hotel and avoid the window shoppers.

Overall I give the hotel a good rating. The room we had was large with King size bed, couch, desk, mini-bar, and a nice view looking out on the Round Lutheran Church.

I do have to say the hallways are brick, monotonous, and hypnotic. Seemed like a great location to film a horror movie.

Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel
 

Has anyone stayed in a Junior Suite at this hotel? I am trying to determine if this suite has a totally separate bedroom separated by a door and the approximate size of the suite. I faxed the hotel and they have told me that there is a separate bedroom but the size of the suite is 46 sq. meters, which equals only about 400 sq. feet. This would be small even for a standard room!

I stayed there in February and, as a platinum member, was upgraded to a "suite." It was quite nice with a seperate sitting area. However, there was no physical seperation between the bedroom area and the sitting area as you would get at a Marriott suite.

As a modest correction to your area conversion, 46 sq meters is actually 495 sq ft. One might consider that a generously sized room by W. European standards. I have stayed with Intercontinental or Marriott in Paris/London/Frankfurt/Barcelona/Madrid/Helsinki/Frankfurt/Istanbul, and consistently find that "big" rooms are big $$$.

That said, I stayed at the Amsterdam Renaisssance in December and was amazed at the efficiency and quality of reception. Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for your responses. We absolutely have to have a totally separate bedroom area separated by a door. While the Renaissance has told me that the Junior Suite has such a separate bedroom, apparently they don't. They have a "Royal Suite" and they say that has an "extra bedroom". Now I don't know if the Royal Suite has two bedrooms or what. I'm also considering a Deluxe Executive Suite at the Amstal Intercontinetal which shows a photo and it is a separate bedroom separated by sliding doors. Anyone have experience at both of these hotels and can compare location service, etc?

Amsterdam Marriott experiences/tips?

Anyone have any experience at the Amsterdam Marriott.. I did a search and found only a couple of quick sentences about it. Is it walking distance from the Centraal station in Amsterdam? Any other tips?
