Both are good but very different. The Sheraton is in old Taipei and its attractions. The Hyatt is about 4 miles (6.5 k) further out in the newer part of the city , very close to Taipei101. If you are SPG Platinum, very good chance of a significant upgrade 8/10, as a Hyatt Diamond I am about 1 from 10. Both hotels have very good lounges. Really it depends on what you want to see and do in TPE....but it's a very easy city to navigate and either would be a good choice..........

Well, Teipei101 is of course important for me to visit. Is it better / more touristy in old Teipei ?
I think the Grand Hyatt is not a bad choice by all means but the Starwood Promo is a little tempting (I want that free resort night).

Personally I prefer The Sheraton. The city rail link can get you just about anywhere in TPE in 20-30 mins. And , as you say, the mastercard/starwood promotion is attrative. The area around the Hyatt is not of great interest (except for Taipei101 and Sun yat Sen Memorial and further out, the Zoo ). The Sheraton is closer to Lungshan Temple, the history museum, park 228, botanical gardens). Chiang Kai Shek memorial is in between. The best thing to do in Taipei is the National Palace Museum It's a great city.

Haven't stayed here ever since the opening of W Taipei and LM Taipei. However, for this trip back to Taipei, rates at W Taipei and LM Taipei a bit expensive (since I was late in deciding where I wanted to stay until the rooms were mostly sold out).
So, at rate of 7,400NT plus 15% (service and govt tax), Sheraton was the next best (even though Grand Hyatt Taipei rate of 7,400NT per night with the third night free).
One of the reason why I have not stayed at Sheraton is the numerous tour groups staying here. When we arrived around 10PM, another rude guest cut right in front of me.
Anyhow, the front desk personel have always been a bit subpar compared to other spg properties in Taipei. Was upgraded to a Diplomat suite prior to arrival and was assigned a xx50 (instead of the larger xx75). Did asked the front desk rep whether we can have breakfast downstairs at Kitchen 12 instead of Executive Lounge and was told no.
The Executive Lounge attendants was extremely friendly and way better than the front desk personnel.

The big tour groups, mostly from Japan and mainland China, are indeed significant negatives -- most obvious problem is that they jam the elevators and one may have to wait long to get in, quite annoying. At least one front desk agent told me that the large tourist groups was a factor for some of her colleagues chose to leave.
The lounge is indeed very nice and the attendants are very friendly, but it has increasingly become a family eating place with noisy kids running around. It definitely is not like the lounges at your typical upscale Asian hotels with a quieter and more business atmosphere, such as the Regent and Westin Taipei (and Le Meridian that has only limited service).

They have rather large turn overs at the front desk with many new staff, who lack experience and it shows. While the xx75 is larger it faces the front street and could be noisy, and the xx50s have better bathroom with enclosed toilet room.

Platinum can have breakfast, afternoon tea, and happy hour at the lounge. You can also get the 500 SPG welcome points. As usual, free wi-fi (which is very slow; W Taipei's wi-fi is much faster).

Westin renovated their room recently. I was there in April and stayed at one of their Suites and I was not very impressed. While the rooms feels new but they still use that ancient cord phone which certainly feels older than I am. The bathroom haven't changed much other than counter top. The turndown service was horrible, worst I have ever seem in years.
The lounge was alright, certainly steps below Sheraton Taipei.
