Prepaid cancellation?

My son who didn’t know we were coming to watch a grandchild’s sporting event made a Residence Inn prepaid reservation. I know they have restrictions but occasionally hotels will override the restrictions. Not so at the Residence inn near Sacramento. I did surprise him telling him we were coming from Illinois to California.I explained that we were upgraded to a 2 room suite which meant he could stay with us. I No go! I am a lifetime titanium but he is only a silver. I am so disappointed with this hotel! After almost 35 years of being a member nothing would be adjusted. Spoke with elite line and they told me it was up to the hotel and they were unable to help me.
Disappointed with Marriott Residence Inn.

Wait, so you booked a pre-paid non-refundable rate and you are now surprised and disappointed that it cannot be cancelled? Is this a joke? You are expecting that after an upgrade to a 2BR suite that the hotel will allow a free cancellation of a non-refundable rate? Wow ... now I understand the issues with over-entitled Elites.

My son booked a prepaid rate not me. Come on have you ever had to cancel for one or another reason. I am happy to be upgraded!

It would be absurd if the hotel is expected to lose a separate boooking by upgrading you.

As to "one or another reason", if it's something like flight cancellations etc. it's nice of a hotel to be flexible, but even that should never be expected. It's what travel insurance (or a flexible rate) is for.

Booking a nonrefundable rate when you aren’t 100% certain you’ll go is a mistake most of us make once. If I’m in the area I would still checkin to get the points and night credits though so all is not lost.

Ask the hotel if you can move the stay to a future date. It's up to the hotel but at least then you might have some for it.

It really does not matter who the room is booked under, you or your son. Prepaid nonrefundable res generally cannot be canceled for free past initial booking period (~24 hrs). Now, whether the charge for the booking goes through (after booking but prior to stay) has no bearing on the cancellation term.

Im not sure what YOUR 35 years and status have to do with a booking you did not make. Perhaps had it been YOUR booking the outcome might have been different....
