Ice used Marriott chain to detain
According to the news
Ice used Marriott chain to detain immigrants, despite hotel’s 2019 pledge not to cooperate https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/aug/19/ice-marriott-hotel-detentions specifically, 'A Sheraton hotel in Louisiana has been used by immigration officials to hold people who are being deported, in what appears to be a contradiction of a position Sheraton’s parent company, Marriott, took in 2019 when it said its properties would not be used in cooperation with Ice. ... The evidence corroborates the account of a source with knowledge of hotel operations in Alexandria, who told the Guardian that they believed the venue had been used to detain immigrant families and unaccompanied children since it was renovated in late 2023.' Bang goes my titanium status next year, Marriott... |
I would assume there is no corporate level terms the individual hotels are violating. In addition, if someone books a room, does the hotel know its for ICE purposes?

Why should I care as long as there isn't a mess at the hotel or any commotion/drama etc?
And, what if somebody just booked some rooms for the immigrants while they are being transported or waiting further disposition? The hotel likely doesn't even know what is going on, and certainly not corporate. Even if the hotel franchise owner has a contract with ICE or the govt, corporate is unlikely to know what the details are. I'd rather not see corporations stick their nose into hot political issues. It should be up to the local hotel owner and management to decide how they want to rent rooms. I think this thread may belong in Omni more than in the Marriott section.... |

Some people choose not to do business with firms that have philosophies and/or take actions with which they don't agree. See "Sales, Tesla".

Agree - why care as long as the property isn’t a wreck when you stay there.

Just to note that the quotes from the article pasted in the OP omitted an important point - the article also says :
“It is not clear whether Marriott has a formal contract with Ice or what the company knows about Ice’s use of the Sheraton in Alexandria.” If Marriott is knowingly contradicting its stated position then that’s a valid topic for the forum, but until and unless there’s some evidence of this then we’re in OMNI, so we’ll take a pause here pending any further developments. |
