Courtyard Sapporo, Japan [Master Thread]
Looks like a new property in Sapporo - any recent experiences for Platinum members? I didn't see a property thread for this hotel.
|
Not sure if there is a dedicated thread for this issue - I made two reservations at this property, one with points for two nights, and one immediately after with cash. I receive a copy of the cash reservation confirmation, but not the points confirmation, although the points were deducted.
Should I escalate to the property, or to Marriott customer service to fix this? |
The hotel is in a quiet part of town. The reviews are pretty mixed. There were quite a few reviews saying the air conditioning is not individually controlled. It's the same temperature hotel wide. There are no windows, and the rooms are pretty stuffy.
Anyone have a more recent experience? |

Breakfast, location, concierge capabilities, etc? The location is very good in my opinion as it’s a 20 minute walk to the Nijo market and most of the major attractions in the city centre and a five minute walk to the Namajimakoen metro station which is very close to the Sapporo JR station as well. |
I had a stay here recently for 4 nights. It’s my first time in Sapporo, and I heard a lot of good things about this new hotel in a fairly convenient location
The location is quite convenient. From JR Sapporo station, it’s a short subway ride to Nakajima Park, and another 5 minute walk to the hotel. The check-in experience was poor. I booked two rooms under my name, one with cash and one with cash and points. I requested rooms on the same floor. Upon arrival, the staff struggled to handle checking in two rooms under the same person. After a few minutes, they informed me that I could only receive one set of elite benefits and only one room would get 16:00 late checkout. They mistakenly charged me 180,000 JPY instead of 80,000 JPY due to a comma misinterpretation. They apologized and called a manager who refunded me. This was unusual in Japan, where people usually double-check and display the amount before charging. I explained that my credit card charged a currency conversion fee, so I’d pay it for the refund, resulting in a loss. They apologized but offered no additional compensation. The hotel did not offer free breakfast for elite members; it’s 4500 JPY for usual guests but 2500 JPY for elite members. The elite benefits were either 500 points, $10 (1500 JPY) daily hotel credit (which could bring breakfast down to 1000 JPY), some wine, or some snacks. I also didn’t get a room upgrade for either of my bookings. The rooms were very new and quite large for Japan. I liked that it had a little couch area. There were blackout curtains and the bed was really comfortable. There was no bathtub. There was lots of dust in a lot of corners of the room, and also on the table and sink tops. There was also always something left in the hallway overnight; sometimes it was a few cleaning carts, sometimes vacuums, sometimes it was some suitcases. I liked that they refilled the nespresso pods daily.
Spoiler
The gym was decently sized with free weights and always empty. The Japanese bath was disappointing; it was only one small bathtub and there were more than 20 (I think) lockers in the locker room. I went during the middle of the workday when it was empty, but one night it was completely packed. It was also just hot water; there were no special bath salts or ingredients infused in the water. Overall, I’d probably come back again. The price was comparable to a Japanese hotel when I went, and it was much larger. |

What did the breakfast look like? Was it a substantial buffet, or a small selection or just grab n go?

It was a decent sized buffet -- your typical breads, some Asian dishes like boiled veggies, rice, miso soup, corn soup, etc. The only "special" thing is build your own Hokkaido miso ramen station; the noodles are decent. Is it worth ¥1000? Maybe. Is it worth ¥4500? Absolutely not.

How does it work for two people in a room (one is elite, one not)? JPY2,500 x 2 minus JPY1,500? Or JPY2,500 + JPY4,500 minus JPY1,500?
So for the two of us, the elite member would be ¥2500 (elite price) - ¥1500 (daily $10 usd voucher) = ¥1000, and the non-elite member would be ¥4500. They were very strict on that and wouldn't budge. They also wouldn't let my mom use my voucher :( |
No photos for my review, but nothing different from what was posted above, visually.
This is a great hotel, to say the least. The hotel is absolutely spotless from the lobby to the restaurant to the rooms. Of course it's very new, but even after being open a few months, you see zero wear and tear. The service was impeccable and friendly throughout. We had two separate reservations, two nights paid and two nights with points, and everything was merged so there was no check-out or even a key swap needed. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, pleasant, and helpful. Parking can be a hassle - the lot is very small, and the outside spots are held for "long term guests" (according to security), so most cars, especially anything on the smaller side, need to go into the parking tower robot - so that can add extra time retrieving your car in the morning. There are security guards most hours who handle the parking assignments and operate the robot tower - if you arrive late or need to leave very early, the front desk staff can assist. Be careful stepping around the car platform when you're inside the tower - there is large metal bar on either side of the car and not a whole lot of room to maneuver yourself to get in and out of your car, and just a light tap against that bar with my ankle left a rather large bruise and plenty of pain. The breakfast buffet is decent - nothing there will blow your socks off, but for a net JPY1,000 per person (Plat+ Elite and guest in the same room), it's perfectly fine unless you want to walk down to a nearby 7-11 for a sandwich. If you're not an elite member and need to pay full price, then it's probably worth a pass unless you really need to eat at the hotel. The only incident was a large group that was assigned to our floor on the 3rd night was full of very rowdy kids running around screaming in the halls. We called the front desk who sent someone up almost immediately to tell the other guests to be quiet, but the manager lacked confidence in their ability to comply, so he moved us a couple floors up into a fresh room. If you waive housekeeping, you receive a voucher good for a drink or snack at the bar for every day you decline housekeeping - a pretty good deal. There is a men's and ladies onsen - each guest room has a set of sleepwear and slippers you use (no street clothes or shoes are to be worn in this, or any onsen in Japan) to go down to the second floor - it's a regular Japanese onsen, so there are bathing stations setup for mandatory pre- and post- soak bathing (cleaning yourself thoroughly head to toe with soap), then you enter the onsen pool - not sure if there is anything special about the water, but it's a nice touch to have in the hotel. It seemed well used, at least by Japanese guests. In-room temperature controls are available in the room, but they do not go below 20C - this was fine during our stay, but in warmer summer months may be a problem for cold sleepers. It got pretty chilly in the room, so we actually turned it up to 22C at night. There is no dedicated concierge, but the front desk was able to call a restaurant for us to check reservations, and even made a call to Yodabashi Camera to place an item on hold for me. Location is very convenient, you can walk to any number of restaurants or bars in Susukino - it's about 15-20 minutes walking by foot A very nice stay at a great hotel and if we return to Hokkaido next summer, we will stay here again. |
Confirming the above punches above its weight for a Courtyard.
Right next to the new intercontinental with a family mart (inside a tower so hard to find next door). There is a little stand selling fried eggs next door, 500 yen without rice, 1,000 with. Breakfast ended too early for me (last order 10 am), so didn’t bother. As titanium , had options for 1500 restaurant daily credit ( didn’t think it was pp but didnt really know) or one lunch buffet for two. I suggest you make reservations for lunch, it was packed. Chicken quality not what I would hope for, but great salads. my SNAs cleared into a reasonably well designed suite, on the small side but with two bathrooms. Only drawback was the table is too large for the room so getting to the couch required squeezing past the table. Bed quality and pillow quality very good (I had asked for a mattress topper in advance). Heat and cooling were sluggish but worked after enough time. Last night was cold and I regret not using the humidifier as my sleep suffered due to nasal dryness . Check in and staff service excellent throughout. One extra nice feature of the suite was a Nespresso machine with 16 different types of coffee pods. |
