We had a two night stay at the start of January using points and night upgrade vouchers. We had our upgrade confirmed and were given the Hemingway Suite on the top floor with stunning views east, south and west.
The car park is behind the hotel and had plenty of space. It was $45 a night self parking. Checkin was easy and the staff were very friendly. We were given the choice of breakfast or points (we are titanium), picking the breakfast for two covering a main, coffee, juice and side each. The breakfast was very good and we were more than pleased with the offering. The destination fee included 15usd Food and Beverage credit each day which we used in the bar. The drink prices were no worse than anywhere else along Duval Street with a beer around 9usd, glass of wine 12usd, and cocktails 16usd. The cards / coupons mention by others have gone and it’s now all done automatically. Our room was very comfortable. The AC worked well, which it needed to with all the glass (and no blinds or curtains). USB A and C ports were on either side of the bed along with power outlets. We had daily housekeeping, which is becoming less common. We didn’t use the other parts of the destination fee, like the mojito tasting or bike rental. The WiFi needed IP tracking turned off in settings before it would connect. We had no real noise from Duval Street, but the hotel is under the final approach for Key West airport so you can hear the jets going over occasionally. There was a minor maintenance issue with one of the blinds in the room completely missing, which faced East so got the full sunrise directly to the bed. Not a particularly problem in January with the late sunrise and our U.K. jet lag, but would have been annoying later in the year. You also needed to be very comfortable with the bathroom as the toilet door was frosted glass with no lock and large gaps at the side and top. The smoke alarm above the bed also had a flashing light on it but it didn’t disturb us. The location on Duval street was very handy and easy to walk to all the tourist sites, restaurants and bars. We were very pleased with our stay here and would come back here. |
Is there something special about Key West award pricing, maybe due to local taxes or something?
On many dates, I see La Concha at high award prices compared to paying all cash. For example 7/28-7/30 is 186,500 points total plus $30 per night, or pay all-cash $287 per night including the $30 fee. That comes to a point value of $0.00276 = ($287-$30)/(186500/2). I see similar value at other Key West properties including non-luxury ones like Fairfield. It's definitely not a systemwide issue, since I just booked a Towneplace elsewhere at high point value. |

The La Concha seems to have a minimum points redemption cost of 77,500 points per night, which makes it a poor value when cash prices are low. |
Thanks. I was unaware of a floor price like that. I guess category bands are still used behind the scenes. That would explain the Fairfield being 58k but under $200 also.
