No breakfast because restaurant closed!

I just checked into a 4P in the US and am pretty pissed at being told that there will be no breakfast the next morning as their restaurant is closed. I am definitely a breakfast person and was looking forward to a no fuss breakfast at the hotel; instead I will have to waste time and effort and drive around in search of an alternative breakfast venue; not to mention the additional expense.

Needless to say there was no notification of this or else I could have easily booked a different hotel.

What would be the best way to deal with this?

Present your breakfast bill to be reimbursed.

This happened to me at a DoubleTree a couple years ago. They had an electrical problem and had to close the restaurant. We just stopped at Starbucks on the way to our meetings. NBD. Stuff happens.

If the cost of a breakfast is significant to you, or you find the unexpected difficult to deal with, may I suggest that travel generally may not be for you.

Speaking for myself, I find it hard to fault the hotel without knowing more about the circumstances. If the restaurant is closed because of, say, a plumbing or electrical problem that started months ago, I'm completely with you. If, however, the restaurant is closed because of a problem that occurred an hour ago, I come down on on the side of the restaurant.

Understand that things sometimes happen when you travel. Years ago, my flight home from SXM was cancelled when a volcano on a neighboring island erupted and spewed ash that closed the airspace for several days. Even longer ago, my checked bag once ended up on a different flight from the one I was on (due to the cancellation of the original flight IAD-LAX) and some passengers were rebooked on one alternate IAD-DEN, while some were booked on another, but the checked bags all went on the other flight, which was hijacked to YVR by an escaped mental patient -- true story, I swear!

I've always looked at occurrences like that as part of the adventure of travel!

Stuff happens, I think everyone can agree there. However just going "oh OK, I don't need to get what I paid for" isn't the answer. The hotel should have some alternative in place. Can be as simple as reimburse $20 upon receipt from local McDonald's. If there's a hotel next door, strike an agreement so customers can have breakfast there. Amother alternative, they could simply take $20 off the hotel rate. Etc... There's multiple ways can be handled.

Things happen, it doesn't mean the business isn't still responsible.

Example, I understood that the RI I stayed at didn't produce it's own power. However it was still responsible for ensuring I had power. When it went out for half a day, i expected a refund. Im not in the business of giving companies money for services they then don't provide. If business didn't want to need give refunds, they could invest in generators/solar/etc.

When you were told that the restaurant was closed at check-in, what else was discussed about the reason for closure, alternatives/compensation from the hotel, and advice about other breakfast venues in the vicinity ?

At a 4P??? It's probably about $1.50 in value. If you want to get worked up over that, that's your prerogative, but just not worth it to me.

I was given to understand that the restaurant had been closed for a while and was likely to be closed at least until the end of the month. No alternatives were offered regardless of my Titanium status. They had a fully stocked pantry but no initiative was taken to allow any food to be taken from there instead of breakfast.

For those who graciously suggest that travel is not for me for complaining about the lack of breakfast - that is your opinion and I am under no obligation to follow it.

Huh? OP paid for a room and his full benefits. He didn't get his full benefits and should be entitled to compensation.

Saying travel isn't for OP or just live with it because it's just a 4P and $1.50 doesn't make sense. I didn't realize travel is only for Uber richmb

People get worked up over st Regis NY not giving breakfast, why not the 4P?

OP, you are entitled to compensation. I'm not sure what that it. Probably not much because it is Marriott but I'd ask to speak to the duty manager and see what can be worked out

May I suggest the corner Starbucks. Or if you wanted something fancier…the local Denny’s.
I’m sure they gave you the bonus welcome points. Not much else to see here.

It happens! Just take the welcome points and write to Marriott for compensations in terms of points. At least they tell you when you check-in. Once I got the F&B voucher and they told me when the restaurant was closed and they suddenly shut early without telling me. I went down and it was closed just like that! This has never happened before and this is post-Covid US. I have experienced deli in supermarket suddenly closed more than once due to staff shortage during one trip in PNW last September.

I stayed at a 4P in the US that has a Dennis next door so it doesn't have its own restaurant so they couldn't offer breakfast as welcome amenity.
