Welcome Amenity

If I have separate reservations for two consecutive nights and opt to get points for the first night, may I opt to get restaurant breakfast instead for the second night?

You should only be allowed to make one choice of welcome gift, the T&Cs say:

"Platinum Elite Members and above receive one Elite Welcome Gift (of their choice where multiple options are offered) on a Stay of one or more consecutive nights as described in 2.1.d, even if they check in and check out of the same Participating Property within 24 hours"

I recently stayed 7 nights somewhere but on 4 separate reservations, and was only offered one welcome gift choice

If one is staying with someone who is also a Marriott BONVY member, one can get around this by alternating stays in each of your names.

No. Neither do you get credit for two stays. Consecutive stays are counted as one and have been for decades.

Nice try.

If the T&Cs did actually allow you to get a new elite amenity each day by breaking down a stay into a series of one-night reservations, you can be sure there would be a thread or two here n the forum ....

I thought points were a "one time per stay" Amenity?

They don't, really. However, they can assume that you didn't stay at both hotels on the same night. Over the years, there have been reports on FT saying that this works and just as many that say that one of the stays was rejected for points/nights/stays. If you try this, you do so with the knowledge that you might not earn credit for both rezzies.

I've always thought it was odd that you could get Breakfast Every Day, or one points gift. One might think that the amenities should be kind of parallel, like Breakfast Every Day, or 1000 Points Every Day (which is about $7). For a multi day stay this gets out of whack pretty quickly

And now I am getting a feeling in my stomach that someone in accounting at Bonvoy is going to see this and decide that Free Breakfast should just be one day to match the one point gift. My bad.

Also depends on where you are. The breakfast choice/benefit is generally much more generous in the Asia/Pacific region than, say, North America.

While I do defer to your expertise and experience, are you SURE that two consecutive nights will not qualify as two stays in the Marriott system? For Hiltons I agree that two consecutive nights are counted as just one stay, but for Marriott I thought that two nights are counted as two nights for purposes of elite qualification.

Rule 2.1.d.i:
A Stay is a stay of one or more consecutive nights at the same Participating Property regardless of check-in and check-out activity by a Member who: (A) provides their Membership Number at the time of reservation or at check-in; (B) pays a Qualifying Rate or applies an Award Redemption for the stay; and (C) stays in one of the reserved guest rooms. A Member may only earn Points for up to three (3) guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates if they stay in one of the reserved guest rooms and pay a Qualifying Rate or apply an Award Redemption for all of the guest rooms.

A "stay" is not the same thing as a "night" within Hilton Honors or even Marriott BONVY.

Marriott does not have the term "stay" as being "counted" for guests within its system, but consecutive nights, even if on separate reservations, are indeed treated as a single stay for benefit accrual purposes, such as welcome amenity. Yes, each Elite Qualifying Night (EQN) is counted.

I make a lot of stays built up of consecutive reservations. If you stay at a hotel in that way, my experience is that you receive one choice of bonvoy-related welcome gift at the start of the stay (points, breakfast etc), not at the start of each new reservation, as everyone is saying above.

Depending on the hotel, they may send a new helping of their own welcome gift to the room when each reservation changes over (eg. fruit bowl, snacks etc), but that is very much local policy dependent.

Whether your stay is made up of one reservation or five, your Bonvoy account will credit with one EQN for each night you stay at the hotel, and total points adding up to the total spend.

But, and this is what the OP may be referring to, in my experience each reservation will credit to your account separately as the stay progresses, when each reservation ends. My only experience of it not happening like that has been when I have either arrived on one reservation and then kept extending it directly with the front desk, or if I have asked the hotel to combine separate reservations on one folio and post it all at the end (but even that is not always foolproof).
.
I don't think it really matters which way you do it, you receive the same points etc in the end. The only situation where I can think there might be an anomaly is if you were registered for a promo that awards bonus points after a certain number of stays. I'm guessing that reservations posting individually could potentially trick the system into awarding points in that scenario, but I have never been in that situation so have no experience either way. Technically though it would still only be one stay so those points could be taken back later.

It is quite handy sometimes to have very long stays posting in stages due to separate reservations, to gain access to the points. And on the occasions there have been posting issues and I have contacted both regular and Amb CS there has never been any pushback that I am still at the same hotel and will have to wait until I finally check out. And that's over a period of several years at multiple hotels in 4 continents. Just my experience so far though, YMMV of course.
