Moxy Kyoto, Japan [Master Thread]
Hi, looking to see if anyone has comments to share re Moxy Kyoto. (https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotel...yoto/overview/) I look and could not find a master thread here.
Here's what I have been able to determine myself from poking around (apart from all the usual Moxy branding things) ... newish hotel opened in mid 2021 and is located near Nijo district and the castle ... rooms are small and compact like typical Japanese hotels (and unlike say Westin or JW) ... hotel is conveniently located near train and bus station so easy to get to/from airport and around visiting ... service seems up to standard and "friendly" ... no facilities ... not the best shopping/dining around the hotel ... Any comments or reviews appreciated. Considering where would be best to stay in Kyoto between all the offerings. Thanks, SF |
I had a 3 night stay here back in November and agree with most of your research. Rooms are new but small, convenient location just a short walk to the station. The breakfast space is the bar area and could get quite crowded at peak times.
I had narrowed my choice down to Moxy or The Chapter and Moxy had a great cash and points rate so I went with it. This was my first time in Kyoto so I spent very little time at the hotel and it served it's purpose. I'm sure the Westin, RC and Mitsui are much nicer hotels, but cost significantly more than I wanted to spend for this trip. |
yule_boy thanks for the confirmation! Helps to hear from someone who has been there in person. Appreciate it.

Stayed at the Moxy Kyoto
My wife and I just stayed at the Moxy Kyoto for 2 nights, March 21-23. I like to share briefly our experience there.
We checked into the hotel at around 1:30 pm. At the bar counter, just a few steps from the entrance door was friendly staff who spoke good English. As a Platinum member, we were offered points or breakfast vouchers. We had the breakfast choice. USD 10.00 = 1200 Yen/person/day. Basic Western and Japanese breakfast costs 2000 yen. I enjoyed the porridge and some eggs and toast. My wife chose the pastry, which cost 300 Yen. I agree with Yule_boy, the room is new and small. We had to put our 2 medium suitcases on the floor, at the end of our beds, which left us little space to walk around. The pictures will let you see. However, it was enough for our short stay here in Kyoto. Our first meal after we checked in, we just walked a few steps from the hotel and went to Yamasho Ramen restaurant, right next to the hotel it is a very good place to have a hot bowl of Ramen when the weather outside is cold and windy. Two nights at the Moxy Kyoto cost us 47,000 yen. I would stay here again because of the good values. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...97503f120.jpeg Moxy main floor lounge https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cb99de16d.jpeg Check-in counter at the bar https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7db6d6a39.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6b85605cb.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07f50c29f.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cba0e1f83.jpeg Breakfast at the Moxy |
AsiaMission thanks for the info and the pics. Much appreciated. Ramen place next door sounds like a good idea too! Now I am debating when exactly to go visit Kyoto. So many places, so little time ... haha.

Did a 1-night stay here before transferring to the Mitsui. Was visiting Nara, so really only needed a hotel to sleep. I work for Marriott and stayed using my discount.
Room was very comfortable, despite being pretty tiny. Think a little bigger than an APA room. Very comfortable though. Platinum members got a F&B credit which was good for 2 drinks at the bar. Didn't eat here, but it is a great location, very close to a JR station and a bunch of restaurants nearby. 7-11 and lawson just down the street. |
I stayed here in May 2025, my first Moxy. As someone said elsewhere, the Moxy was like the fanciest youth hostel you can imagine. The rooms are small but well designed. We paid about $10 extra per night to get the slightly larger Sakura rooms, and the small amount of extra space came in very handy for our luggage. Platinum and up can elect ¥1200 per night (sort of US$10) up to two guests in room. It can be used for any meal or drinks. My partner is not a breakfast person so they let me use both vouchers each morning to cover the ¥2000 breakfast charge (buffet with a good variety). Two welcome drinks were also provided and semi-fancy coffee (Nespresso professional machine) is unlimited for all elites (honor system). The steamed milk function operates only during breakfast. After that, it's just packaged creamer.
Three laundry machines (digital wash dry combo) in the basement are very useful but take a long time to dry unless it's a tiny load. My full size load took about 3 hours. There is a web app where you can monitor the status of the three machines from anywhere within the hotel's WIFI--that was useful since it takes a while for the machines to get free. The ground level has a number of areas to hang out, socialize, or work, if you want to get out of your room. There are few interesting restaurants in the neighborhood but it's across the street from a JR Rail (Nido) station so you can get around pretty easily. It was half the price of the other chain options in town and good value. |
Platinum status. Booked 5 nites for 2 ppl using points for Apr 2026.
