Canceling a hotel stay immediately after check-in?
It’s midnight and we just checked into a Residence Inn of poor quality, and I am being very polite with this wording. The carpets are stained a dozen different ways, there’s sticky goo on the dining table and the nightstands, the sofa bed is full of large crumbs all over the sheets, the toilet has brown stains on the seat.
What is our best course of action? We doubt a room change would be productive for two reasons. One, we booked a uniquely large room type and it’s not clear if any more rooms are available. Two, the reviews for this hotel are full of people complaining about hygiene and wear and tear. Unfortunately we were not in a position to read these reviews prior to booking.

In general, I have found Bonvoy properties to be very understanding and forgiving whenever I've needed to cancel a reservation after the cut-off time. And I can only remember one or two occasions in my life when, after checking in, the situation called for me immediately checking out.
But if a hotel is so poorly run that they let conditions get that bad (not just a one-off, given the multiple reviews), then they could easily be the kind of place that wouldn't let you cancel a reservation without penalty even under these conditions.
I guess another question would be, after midnight, where else are you going to go that has a uniquely large room available?

Would help to name and shame the place, and I agree with DJ: Where are you going to find a suitable alternative late at night?

So OP how did the conversation go?
Kind of sort of sounds like they literally gave you a room that literally had not been cleaned.
But please post the name and location.
