Gluten-Free Toaster
Learned something new this morning. Was grabbing some breakfast at the Springhill Suites where I am staying. Breakfast area was crowded and the two 4-slot toasters were full. Spotted a 2-slice toaster nearby and plopped in my English muffin. Breakfast room lady said in horror “Sir, that’s the gluten-free toaster!” I apologized and said I spend 80 or so nights a year in various Marriott properties and had never seen one of those. Is this something new, or am I just unobservant?

The Springhill Suites I am staying at does not have this.
I do appreciate them trying to accommodate customers with various allergies and dietary needs. |
Sounds like gluten is the new nut/peanut allergy!

I always thought all toasters are gluten free
|
Crumbs from wheat bread have gluten in them.

Didn’t know there was such a thing. Was it labeled anywhere?

Me also - never seen a toaster (or any other kitchen appliance) made of edible materials.

I never understand why so many people scoff at medical allergies and yet vegans and vegetarians (who have no medical issues and whose predilections are so much more restrictive and difficult to satisfy) are so widely tolerated.
That said, and I don't want to stray too far off topic. I do know that glutens can be an issue for some people. But I also personally know 3 people that avoid glutens because they have 'heard' glutens are bad for them, but have no actual issue. |
Even trace amounts of gluten can cause a serious immune reaction— think diarrhea and fatigue for the rest of the day— in someone with celiac disease. So it’s a thoughtful amenity to have. It definitely should be better protected and I would not feel bad about what happened.

As a merely gluten-intolerant person myself (similar symptoms to lactose intolerance, which I also have...), I'm delighted at the implication there's probably some gluten free bread around. |

But does the hotel serve any gluten-free bread?
