Apparently, I've been pronouncing Marriott wrong my whole life!
I saw a video last night on Facebook, and apparently, Marriott is supposed to be "Mary-it" and not "Marry-ott".
This is it - I'm done with Marriott. I'll be moving to Wyndham Rewards exclusively from now on :-)

A rather telling insight into Marriott's corporate culture that their "Global Cultural Ambassador" tells us all that the right way is "the North American way" .....

Seriously, though, now I'm going to be really in-tune to how Marriott employees pronounce their hotel names. I still can't believe I've been wrong for so long.

Every time the word "Marriott" is pronounced in any of their own materials, it rhymes with chariot. Even knowing this, I still say "marry-ott".
It reminds me of when I was working for Disney on the Shanghai project. My whole life I thought the city was pronounced "shang-hi", but was quickly corrected that it is actually "shong-hi". So I pronounced it that way in all my Disney interactions, but have since gone back to the old way because it just sounds so pretentious to say it the right way!

Sorry, I can't help it and am not picking on you, but this is such a (North) American thing to write in order to denote the "ah" sound.

i think it's unrealistic to expect everyone to pronounce foreign words properly. por-shuh, por-shah, por-sheh. does it really matter?

Back when Great America was first known as Marriotts Great America in the Bay Area, everyone called it Marry-otts. That pronunciation stuck to this day with the hotels, at least around here.

Had a German boss back in the 80's. There was a family who's name was Kneubeul. The family did NOT pronounce the "K".
Mr. German boss pronounced the K and the family corrected him. After they left, Mr. German Boss said to me "They don't even
know how to pronounce their own name!". Makes me chuckle every time I think of it.
